| For those interested in the history of our great club tomorrow is a special day, celebrating the centenary of a landmark occasion.
On 24th April 1909 Wakefield Trinity lifted the RL (then Northern Union) Challenge Cup for the very first time, beating Hull, who had also lost the previous year's final, by 17 - 0.
The game was played at Headingley, with the official attendance given as 24,587 (a then record crowd for the Northern Union), though it was said that several more thousand got in for free by breaking down the gates!
The Man of the Match was Trinity scrum-half Tommy 'Trapper' Newbould, who crossed for the first try. He formed a potent partnership with his stand-off, team captain Harry Slater, and they had a hand in the other four tries. The following year Newbould and loose-forward Harry Kershaw were rewarded by selection for the Great Britain team's tour to Australia.
The team returned in triumph aboard a tramcar, bearing the sign "T'DREADNOWTS ARE COMIN" to huge crowds from Newton Bar to the reception at the Alexandra Hotel at Belle Vue.
Trinity 1-5-17 Goal: Metcalfe; Tries: Bennet 2, Newbould, Crossland, Simpson
Hull 0-0-0
Team: J.D. Metcalfe; E.W. Bennett, W. Lynch, E. Sidwell, W.G. Sampson; H. Slater (capt.), T.H. Newbould; J. Walton, A.K. Crossland, R. Beaumont, J. Auton, G. Taylor, H. Kershaw.
Attendance: 24,587 (£1,489)

| When you look at the attendance and the takings it shows how prices have gone up whilst crowds have gone down - interesting connection there
Anyway good incentive to do it again 100 years on - as if we need any more incentive!

| Not sure it is. The name I was given was Metcalfe. Harry Slater appears in this postcard, and it doesn't look like him. The guy next to him I think is the one, and he looks even more like Brad Drew!.

| Now that is what I would like to see in our new ground. Cracking images. The mind boggles at the kind of lives these people must have lived. Tell you one thing they all look like pretty fit chaps (purely in the athletic sense you understand) - difficult to tell (withouth knowing ofcourse) which are forwards and which backs.
I wonder who the oldest living former trinity player is, it is probably just feasable that they may have played alongside some of the younder players in this picture.

| You might be right.
I was lookin at a team photo I have and to be honest Slater was nearest candidate (with a changed parting ) but the photo I have of Jimmy Metcalfe also looks nothing like him
Maybe he is just a wannabe imposter

| The Wakey memorabilia I tend to buy on Ebay are old photographs, although they've been taken over now by people who stick a newspaper cutting in a frame next to a scrawl of a signature and want £20 for it.
