I used to go round most of the pits in the area and a couple of 'quaint' ones I can remember were Newmillerdam because it seemed a strange place to have a pit and Manor Colliery which was in the middle of Lupset.

Wakefield had a training "pit" mock up at Newton Hill workshops, all lads straight from school did initial training there for about 2 weeks, if my memory serves me well.
Don't know when it closed, I did mine there in 1962.

It was a 13 week course combined with the Technical College off Wood St. There were 2 sets of trainees' when one was at school the other would be at Newton Hill Workshop, cant remember exactly how many days' turnaround it was though.
