| Seriously good rugby brain, he's going to be a massive loss next year.
With Sarginson likely to be out for a good while would anyone like to see him given a run at centre against Widnes and Hull ?
Charnley
Gelling
Burgess
Manfredi
Pretty quick threequarter line.

I don't understand this comment???
Whenever he's played he's always looked like a decent squad player.
On top of that we've probably spent a good amount of money getting him back to fitness. Did we also pay a fee to bring hI'm back from Sale?
We should give him 12 months to see if we can recoup some of our investment. If Sarge is leaving theres a slot available.

Problem with Thornley is he always looks like he's dragging a three piece suite behind him, not very quick.

Agreed, he lacks the flair of Gelling and Sarginson as well. Having said that I'm not sure Gildart is up to the role of reserve winger/centre yet due to his size so would have preferred to keep Thornley for another season, perhaps with Gildart loaned out to another SL club

| I think it's time we got ourselves a real centre from somewhere. Maybe easier said than done, but the acquisition of George Carmont was a smart bit of scouting and didn't cost us the Earth.
We seem to have been experimenting with centres for quite a while now. I think Sarge fits the bill from time to time - despite his occasionally ridiculous decision-making (such as the try he gifted to Saints and the sitter he failed to lay on for Burgess last night) but he's going soon anyway. Gelling's performances can range from superstar to donkey in the course of one game, and Thornley is always injured, but given the fuss that surrounded his return from Rugby Union, he doesn't seem to offer much even when he's fit. It says something when the most punch we've got from a centre was John Bateman's performance last night - he may not be lightning-fast, but at least he scared his opponent and looked dangerous with ball in hand.
It's probably not a priority in the team with Gildart waiting in the wings - but you can never be totally sure that a kid will do it for you. I just wish we could get at least one centre to fill one of our centre shirts.

Not many players can boast 1 season and a league/cup double. 13 tries, 10 assists in the league. 4th highest tackle busts for us, 4th highest clean breaks, 3rd highest average gain.
apart from those stats in a double winning team, get rid!

| Thornley is definitely worth keeping, he was looking great before he got injured last Good Friday. If he's over his injuries then he should stay, and I'm not convinced Sarg will still be here next season anyway.

| As a rugby league fan and an England fan, I'd love to see Burgess at centre or fullback. As a Saints fan, not so much. He's wasted on the wing.

| I thought he would struggle in the NRL, I am starting to think he could go well as the season progresses. Reminds me of SKD, ironic he may well end up replacing him at the Roosters.
As for Thornely looks like he is gone and personally I'm not too fussed. It's a shame about the injuries but ultimately there is no point paying a player to sit in the stands. As someone else has commented he also seems to lack pace for a winger and the basic centre skills to be a centre. For me he falls into the void between centre and wing without excelling at either.
Would be nice to see us sign an experienced quality centre but where you find him is the question. Talk of Gildart is very very premature and we would be daft to base our recruitment strategy on an unproven kid who may never make the cut.

I was grateful for his skills in the 2013 Challenge Cup Final. He was definitely Wigan standard that day.

| I'm really surprised that we're letting Thornley go. He's had injury problems and he's got a lot if improving to do but he's got plenty about him.

| We have paid Thornleys wages for 2 injury hit years, the least we should do is see how he goes for 6 months. He knows he is out of form and he knows he will have to earn his place plus the extra competition for sarge and gells is only a good thing.
If it is a cash issue I don't think he would be on a massive amount in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps a pay cut until he proves his fitness? Then it will be up to him, does he stay with the club who helped him through 2 difficult years and pay them back by taking a temporary paycut (if needed) or does he jump ship for better cash and an easier route to starting 13?

I'm not down on Thornley just for the sake of it, but that final is about the only performance of his I can remember. All the rest of his Wigan appearances just blend into a kind of unchanging, uninspired anonymity. That said, I won't pretend he wasn't very useful indeed at Wembley.

Thornley I think disappoints because of his sheer size people expect a much more physical approach.
He does seem at times to be short of self confidence not sure if this is just how his personality transfers on to the pitch. He does seem sound defensively.
On the assumption that he has no long lasting issues with his injuries I would look to keep him going forward assuming that Sarginson is off to the rugger buggers and if it's a choice between Tomkins and Thornley at centre then it's a no brainer for me.

Will you just feck off, seriously.
It's not his fault he's been prone to injuries is it? He was a very good , reminded me of Carmont. Didn't do anything silly and just went about business as usual.
Good luck to Iain in the future.

Why?, can you not handle the fact people have different opinions than you, as stated elsewhere by other fans he was very ordinary, i'm guessing that he gets away with it being a Wigan lad as do others

Anyone who can perform to the best of their abilities on the biggest stage probably is good. Thornley wasn't as good as Carmont or Sarginson, but his form at the end of 2013 suggested a decent player. He was unlucky with injuries. It happens. There's really no need to be so negative about a lad who served Wigan well.
