| I was just wondering whether anyone knew anything about the kind of media roles that are available at the club, and what opportunities are like and if there's any sort of work experience?
I'm starting uni in September and torn between doing a media degree (very broad, lots of different stuff) or policing. I'm leaning towards media at the moment but I'd love to work at the club or somewhere within the sport in a role like this. I have emailed the club a few weeks ago but never received a reply.
Does anyone have any knowledge of these things? Both at the club and within the sport, or knows if there's anyone I can contact for some information?

| I really wish I hadnt wasted my time doing media at uni. Your circumstances might be different ,but it was a complete waste of time for me

| It's not really media so to speak as it's got that many modules to chose from and also modules from different courses. Could lead to teaching, television crew work, or roles such as advertising, marketing...Of course though I'd love to go into something like sports marketing, hence this question.
I'm doing English Lit as well anyway, so there's always that just in case.

| I didn't know you could do a degree in policing, I suppose nowadays you can pretty much study for a degree in anything. Policing's not a bad career all considered. You only have to work for 25 years at which point you can retire on a final salary pension. You just have to remember to keep active once retired, as retired police officers have the worst mortality rate around.
If possible get yourself an engineering degree, then the worlds your oyster.

its funny you should say that, a close friend of mine has done the same and spent many years in the media business and completed various degrees etc and is brilliant at all aspects but the pay is poor and the opportunities are extremely scarce no matter how much of a natural you are...
Besta luck to the OP but its very very hard

| There's no harm in dropping their media guy a line or sending them a mail? I did a few weeks work experience on League Express back in the day so you could drop them a line too. Depends on your circumstances and whether you could drive to different places etc...
I'd give it a go - a lot about breaking into the media is being in the right place at the right time.
The problem about the police force is that they're not really pushing a recruitment drive anymore - if anything they're looking to cut back.
good luck!

| It's more of a 'who you know' than what you know when it comes to the media - It's all about networking. I Graduated from Uni a couple of years ago with a TV and Radio Production degree and whilst it is hard to get anywhere, there are ways to get yourself about, so to speak. Just don't do the course expecting people to be falling at your feet waiting to employ you, because chances are that won't happen. If you want to do it though, do it - you'll be surprised how many people you have the potential to work with.

| Speak to Mick Gledhill, see if he can point you in the right direction. I've done a bit of work for with Mick at Bradford, commentating on games for the visually impaired. Its a great expirience and opens a whole new side of the game up.

| I think Chris Irvine (the one off Super League Back Chat) lectures on Huddersfields Sports Journalism degree and often has some of his students shadowing him at games. Might be worth a look for a more RL-orientated degree.

Don't forget there is a recruitment freeze in place on the police, a massive backlog of applicants who have been working as special constables or community support officers. It could prove very risky to do such a specialist degree in a field were job vacancies are so sp.

| I am in my final year of Film Production at Sheffield Hallam and people may assume that it's hard to find jobs out but there are a variety of careers out there if you ask the right people. Most of the time it is essentially about building up contacts and who you know.
