The Sheffield Eagles that beat us at Wembley is now, technically, part of Huddersfield Giants. This is a 'new' Sheffield Eagles, created from scratch after the 'merger'.

He was never known by that name though. It was always the shortened version, Tony.

I've never heard anyone call him Anthony Mestrov.

This isn't another of those legendary 'Wigan threw the match' stories, is it?

The version of it I heard wasnt so much legendary as shocking.

Still, probably 99% as most of these stories are.

I've always it found it difficult to believe. Though I was assured that Wigan had done this once before, in the Regal Trophy Final against Cas in 1994 (?).

But who knows what goes on in the heads of some players.

Indeed. Id really hope it wasnt true, given some of my boyhood heroes were involved. Still, who knows, and we are entering potentially dangerous areas.

To be fair Cas in those days were a very strong team indeed, particularly in the forwards. I've heard that rumour but never been sure whether it was just an attempt to cover for a defeat by a good side, albeit a smaller club.

Cas gave us a series of hard games that season, which suggests that you're on the button with that. It's also a fact that Wigan underperformed for much of it due to John Dorahy's poor and unpopular leadership, regardless of any conspiracies.
