| My understanding, is that if a professional sportsman/women was found with traces of performance enhancing/recreational drugs in their system then it was an automatic 2 yr ban as per world doping regulations. The goalkeeper for sheffield united, paddy kenny has been found with traces of ephidrine in his system which is an amphetamine based drug. he received a nine month ban. just wondered what peoples thoughts were. Am i wrong on the automatic drug ban on sporting fronts as a whole or is their a hint of inconsistency.

The ban is relative to what has been taken and the circumstances, i do not think it is an automatic 2 year ban.
Kenny's ban is a disgrace anyway given the circumstances around it.

Well it has been accepted as being taken accidentally by the ruling yet still the maximum ban has been imposed.
Ephadrine is banned but is common place in many every day medicines, it has only relativley recently been made a banned substance and the uses in modern cough and flu medicines increase by the day.
The consistency in the ruling is non existant. I am not saying he does not deserve some punishment, he does, but many pro sportsmen have been charged with the same offence under WADA ruling and not got any ban, can name several high profile rugby players in both codes who have had no punishment.
Seems to me Kenny is being made an example of because he is not a high profile player and has been a bit of a thorn in the side of the FA in the past without really breaking many rules.

Anything can be fatal when abused, the levels in the Kenny case were very low and the origin was know, it certainly was not taken to enhance performance, which is why in my opinion the ban is so harsh.
He has been a muppet for not seeking advice but such a ban is excessive to say the least.

| The ban is a World Anti Doping Authority (WADA) enforced ban and is a mandatory 2 year ban unless either
1. Evidence to the satisfaction of the tribunal can be presented for mitigating circumstances (such as the substance being a constituent of a prescribed medicine and not being knowingly taken)
2. The person failing the drugs test is able to present evidence or information that leads to the discovery of other drug offenders within the sport
These can cause the ban period to be reduced from the 2 year period resulting in a shorter ban. Either of these could have happened as part of this case meaning that a shorter ban was imposed.
I am not 100% certain but I think there is no obligation to reveal the reasons for a shorter ban being imposed, so the people involved in any such case would not need to declare it if they had taken either route to shorten the ban.

It depends when you take it. Cocaine is not considered performance enhancing (as in like a steroid) but a stimulant so if you take it out of competition (i.e. in the off season) it isn't actually a banned substance. Steroids attract an automatic two year ban whenever they are taken.
If you are caught taking cocaine in-competition i.e. during the season as Hock was then it does attract the full two year ban which is automatic.
Some RU player was done for taking it at and end of season party and it was the RFU that decided to ban him for 9 months, they didn't need to ban him at all according to the WADA rules.
So I suspect those 10 players all took the stuff in the off season as it is highly unlikely they got off by claiming it was accidental use though a tennis player did. He said he picked up traces of the drug due to snogging a girl in a nightclub and she was a user.

| after watching Dave Allen the other week is there anything stopping Hock in the next 2 years using sports enhancing drugs trainging like a mad man then coming back a bigger more powerful player ??
The reason i mention Dave Allen is that i couldnt believe how much muscle ansd size he had put on.
I am not saying this is right but what is stopping a banned de-registered player from doing it ?

If Hock wants to return to the sport he has to agree to random testing during his ban. If he fails another test he's banned for life.
If he doesn't agree he can't play again. If he changes his mind later his ban starts again and he'll have to go two years of random testing before being allowed to play again.

The FA dont sign up to WADA guidance. Although they use the recognised testing techniques they are free to pass sentence themselves on those who fail tests.
