| Is anybody else getting fed up of the refs constantly going to the video ref on televised games, without making a decision themselves.
Silverwood today was embarrassing !

| Yes. Mentioned this on another thread.
Since when was the referee allowed to consult the Video ref to decide who's head and ball it is at a scrum?

It happened in yesterday's game, when Riley was hurt, he asked if the tackle was illegal.

Did he drop the ball BEFORE hitting his knee? I thought he did but haven't seen it proper since.
Saying that though, on numerous occasions (including a grand final) we've had that go against us.

I think for incidents this it is a fantastic option for refs to use the video ref.
It’s a shame he never noticed Riley’s voluntary tackle and subsequent knock on.
only kidding

| If it's there why not use it. Was 18 - 10 when he used it today for the hodgeson touch and the wrong decision could of turned the game, ok it didnt but thats irrelevent.
Yesterday with the riley incident there was a stoppage in play anyway so why not just double check. Seems like common scence to me.

Definitely a knock on though, however as the ref did not ask the VR about this, I don't believe he could advise him on that. This was changed after the controversial incident at Millenium Magic when the VR gave a decision that was wrong when he shouldn't have been telling the ref anyway.

He only dropped it after banging his head, but technically, that is irrelevant. There was no foul play from Wigan, so it should have been a knock on. It happened in the Saints game today, and I believe a scrum was formed.

| I'm certainly starting to find the video ref very tiring, especially when used so frequently.
What about the introduction of something similar to the tennis system for their 'Hawkeye' where the captain of each side are allowed to ask the ref to go to the screen twice in any one game? This would lessen the disruption of constant referrals upstairs, give the teams control over what gets judged by video and give the actual referee's a kick up the backside as they wouldn't have the luxury of going to the screen for every decision.

| It is not an excuse, Silverwood didn't even ref our game yesterday, just think all refs are getting so use to going to the VR for everything, that when they get a non TV game it's affecting their performance and they are not getting into the right positions etc to make decisions.
To be fair to Steve Ganson he does seem to be the stand out ref who will make his own decisions.

| It's a tough one really. When I was a ref I never gave the knock on when they player was injured, but that was in amateur games. In super league games I think they should give the knock on, the problem is if the attacking side wants to be sporting and let them keep the ball and continue with the set so as to be sporting (seen it happen in the odd football game I've seen and they've kicked it in touch to resolve it) they can't simply kick it in touch or give away the ball in rugby because that would give them another set of 6. Perhaps the rule should be to give the knock on unless the oposition's captain asks the ref to let them continue the set in the name of sportsmanship. That way we get a clear rule but also a rarely used way round it if everyone thinks it's correct to do so.
