You mention how Briers was making yards from every penalty. When needing to score twice we get a penalty from the video ref and kick it about 5 yards. Why? We tapped on the 25. What f*cking use was that?

Did anyone else think it was daft when we tapped at the end of the first half?
1 minute 50 seconds left we were winning 6-4 and had a penalty about 10 metres out reasonably close to the sticks. For me you kick at goal and extend your lead in those circumstances rather than gambling on a quick try, especially because it was a low scoring game. If we'd gone for goal at the end of the first half we'd have still been within a score of drawing the game right until the end.

I wouldn't have kicked for goal at the start of the second half either.

The other one was a bit more understandable as we'd have time to score it and it would be good to put pressure on their line in order to knacker them out early in the half (rather than at the end of a half when they're going to get 10 minutes rest). Mind I'd have still gone for goal because I'm fairly pessimistic. I preffer a guarenteed 2 and the ball back when we're winning rather than a gamble at 4 or 6.

to me kicking a goal (unless in the death) is a majior phycological bost to the defending team, basically saing that "your defence is too good".

warrington one because there pack out muscled us when they needed to. off the back of that their half back orginised well and made it work for them.

2 points of a pen is just like giving up, unless you really step up for the remaining mins

Agreed we kick for goal too much these days and people shouting 'TWOO' from the terraces doesn't help.

that bugs me also. we can score try's (one stat that does not lie) so why not do it?

because our pack was beaten and in the momments we we in the acendency our backs did not orginise.

that and pat has been poor with the boot this year.

It is fairly simple, Warrington were battering our pack and defending well and the ref twice offered us some easy points. So we decided to shove his easy points and carry on getting knocked around by their pack. As a defender what makes you more confident, the opposition getting 2 points and the ball back or the opposition attacking our line, failing and coming away with 0 points? Plus they'd have to be stupid not to already know they were defending well because they'd only let us score 1 try!

John Monie's Wigan teams never gave up the opportunity of kicking for goal when given. It was all about percentages in those days - 2 almost guaranteed points or run the ball and hope to score in an era where points where at much more of a premium due to the 5m rule and the fact that attackers generally ran onto the ball from much deeper, resulting in much more low scoring games.

These days games are generally much higher scoring. At the time I thought the decision to run the ball was the correct one because if Wigan had've managed a try at that point Warrington would have been gutted at HT especially considering that for the middle 20 of the first half they were the better team.

The stumbling block was that Wigan just aren't good enough to take advantage of such opportunities right now.

It's not JUST 2 points is it? It's giving Warrington the belief that we can't score against them. We were winning by 2 points and a try is worth 4 so what's the point in kicking at goal? There was just no advantage to it.

We went 4 in front meaning that they either had to score a try or kick two penalties to even get level with us and we get the ball back. Ok, they managed to do this but i'm sure that wasn't part of the plan



I said on the ground at the time that i'd be the most boring half back in RL. I'd either take 2 if we got a penalty or constantly drop goals when given the chance (see Lee Briers v us about 3 years ago)

Aye but you need to be in the oppositions 30/40 metres to do that and getting out of our own half wasn't good enough at that point. We should have just played for field position.

Spot on - taking a tap in the opposition 10 metres has two advantages, firstly the opportunity of a try, secondly if unsuccessful getting the try the territorial advantage if defended properly is likely to result in the next set being from mid field.

Taking an easy two is percentage rugby - Noble employed the safety first approach in every facet of the game on Friday and it clearly didn't work.

I think taking an easy two points is only ever worthwhile if it makes or consolidates a lead by a converted try or gives you the lead in the last 5 minutes, otherwise it is a negative approach that sends out the wrong message to the opposition.

For your information the penalty count was 11-5 in Warrington's favour. Thaler also caned us 10-4 in the league match at Wakefield.

We kick for goal because our attack is completely inept. We wouldn't have scored another try if we'd have played another 3 hours. "We havn't got a move in us!" was said by quite a few people under the tand after the game and i agree.

It was the second half penalty count that killed us. 8 - 1 I have heard mentioned.

It's hard to understand how two teams can go from being 3 - 4 penalties in the first half to 8 - 1 in the second.
