John Player Trophy Final at Bolton in January 86. Played in bitter sub-zero temperatures, with snow blizzarding on and off all the way through. Wire had beaten us twice already that season. We went on to hammer them in an absolutely brutal match. Andy Goodway's interception tried finished them - a second rower sprinting 60 yards to kill the match. And masses of scrapping on the terraces. What a day.

| Craig Smith scoring a try in the dying seconds to win Mike Gregory's first game in charge which ended up being the start of a long winning run and some of our best rugby in Super League.
Always enjoyed the atmosphere at Wilderspool. Don't know that's because we won there more often than not or the low roof. Probably a combination of both.

| Wilderspool was a bear-pit. Scariest place you could ever go.
The HJ doesn't have that atmosphere, but then the JJB doesn't have CP's atmosphere either.

| Some great memories of matches at Warrington, always a great atmosphere, New Years Day away was always a good day,..... cant remember exactly when but one that sticks out is a challenge cup match from the late eighties, the one and only time we ever sat in the stand (north I think it was) about half way line towards the back, , it was a close match with Wigan starting to gain the upperhand in the 2nd half, Warrington crowd had gone quiet but the few of the Wigan fans in that stand were making alot of noise, all of a sudden this middle aged Warrington woman stood up at the front and began running up and down the steps shouting screaming and swearing at the Warrington fans to sing and get behind their team, nobody took any notice and she got even more hysterical, she stood in the middle of the steps singing on her own giving the V,s to the rest of the Warrington crowd, funny as !! you had to be there but always comes to mind when we play Wire!!

| Henderson Gill and bananas. Some old codger at Burnden after scrapping with any Wiganner he could lay hands on. Seats being ripped out at Maine Rd after Lydon's world record drop goal. Banner waving fans causing traffic chaos after the Catalan game at HJ. Just a few reasons why that scummy club will never get a penny off me again.

If you're thinking of the infamous Cullen incident it was New Year's Day 1988. After a major brawl instigated by Les Boyd, the game was interrupted with constant off-the-ball fighting. There was also trouble in the crowd.
Well into the match, Goodway and Cullen had a set-to. Cullen played dead and Goodway was sent off. As he walked past, Cullen jumped up, ran after him and lamped him from behind. Another brawl started and Cullen also got his marching orders (he's lucky he ever played again, in my opinion).
After the game, described by Malcolm Lord on GMR as "a disgrace to RL", the national press clamoured for Wigan and Warrington's explanations. Lindsay gave an unreserved apology on behalf of the team and the club. Warrington's official response was something like "F**k off!", which was duly printed in most of national newspapers. Class, eh.

Les Boyd was in full threatening mode.
First ten minutes and Graeme West had Boyd by the throat on the floor on the half way line near players tunnel. .

Jan 87 it was. I don't remember it snowing, but I do remember it being the first time I ever saw Wigan beat Warrington. They were our bogey team at the time, for definite.
We played them the week previous and lost 6-4 to a Paul Cullen try. That match was also the one where Steve Hampson returned a kick and Les Boyd steamed into him with a massive uppercut, however Hampo saw it coming and put his arm out, causing Boyd's punch to deflect. The result was Boyd ended up chinning himself. Wonderful, and richly deserved.
Speaking of the final, though. Mark Forster scored for Warrington, and even as a 10 year old, I thought 'not again'. I loved Gill's second try, and love Micron Video's 'capture' of it as it sums the match up perfectly; from John McDermott initially treating Gill's move as just Gill receiving the ball, to him bellowing into the microphone that "Gill's over! Gill's dummied 'is way over!", and seeing the Wigan players celebrate, whilst Mike Gregory had his head in his hands in despair.

Les Boyd has a reputation as a hard man, when in reality he was nothing more than a dirty cheap shot merchant, who shiit out more times than Christ knows what.
Didn't he get a 12 month ban for biting? Quickly followed by an 18 month ban for gouging? Filthy player. A total disgrace.
I remember him, again, in the 1987 JPS final, being tackled and doing his best to scratch Ian Roberts' face off. Only he didn't realise it was Ian Roberts - when he did, his ar5e dropped.

His first ban was for breaking Darryl Brohman's jaw in an Origin game. The second was for gouging.
Boyd wasn't a hard man, ie; Kevin Ward. He was just mental, but he could play a bit too.

Your right Boyd had no need to play it like he did.
He was a good player without the dirty stuff.
I think he was just about banned from playing in Oz altogether, hence he came to wire.
