A sad day for rugby league.

What is it we want in Rugby league? Do we want nice pretty stadiums with fans who can assalt other fans and get away with it, or do we want teams like leigh, widnes etc.. who ok. might not bring as many fans but have no history of violence towards opposition fans? I think that fan behaviour should be included in deciding who gets a franchise and who doesn't, because if it did, then maybe tonight dreadful incidents wouldn't have happened.

I agree that anyone who fights at matches including tonight are idiots, its just that there are gangs of Wire fans young and old who will abuse indiscriminately to opposition fans regardless whether they are with their famalies are not.

At football, they tend to just battle against their like.

For instance, I was shopping with my family in Wigan town centre a few years ago and 300+ members of West Hams ICF were walking towards me towards the JJB (to say I crapped it was an understatement), but they just ignored us and walked past.
Dont want to look like i'm glorifying football violence, I hate it.

Maybe. But I think it makes for a better atmosphere and It's best not to risk it.

Must say some of our own fans were not great tonight, lots of people get caught up in the gesturing to tha wire fans already mentioned closest to us away fans.

The fact that the west stand had mixed fans had IMO no influence on the behaviour that happened tonight from a section of the wire fans!!!

I have never seen incidents like tonight...Sad very sad

Hogan and Yicker, I hope you are both soon OK and over your ordeal and I think that is the right word to use because it's not what we expect in RL.

I remember many years ago in our "Mission Impossible" season going to Wilderspool on the run in to the league title and me and my wife ended up in the Wire end for some daft reason. No trouble at all and a lot of good natured banter. I am sure there are still plenty of decent Wire fans out there and these idiots who attacked the pair of you tonight are a minority. Not that this is any consolation because I know just how shocking such an ordeal can be.

I was in this group, and honestly i have never been as scared in my life. Absolutely shocking behaviour that i hope i never see or hear of again, there is no place or need for it. One Wigan fan actually got set on fire by these idiots!!

Will also be phoning the police in the morning so hopefully they actually start to police these areas

I can't say I agree with you. It's terrible that this incident has happened and I wish Hogan and his girlfriend a speedy recovery. However it not fair to blame or punish their club or scapegoat the majority of their decent fans when the incident occurred away from the ground. Assaults unfortunately happen all the time, including in Wigan town centre pretty much every weekend, some are sports related / some aren't, with most fuelled by alcohol. Serious incidents often occur without any provocation or even reason, I should know having been victim twice in the last decade in two separate towns. Nevertheless these incidents when they occur are best left to the Police, rather than expecting the RL club to intervene or being held responsible in some way. Hopefully in the future, the Authorities will acknowledge the issue of alcohol related violence at local derbies in most sports and have a more sensible kick off time, however I'm not sure that would suit Sky's agenda. Maybe the RFL should be looking at establishing the fixture somewhere specific on the calendar, i.e. a Bank Holiday, like one of the Wigan / Saints derbies.

As far as Warrington Wolves are concerned, unfortunately the idiot minority in towns that normally attach themselves to other sports (i.e, football), don't have that option in Warrington where the RL club is the only show in town. Aside from the victims of violence in this instance, its the decent fans of the Warrington club that I feel sorry for, as I know many personally who will be disgusted with the behaviour of the idiots and the resultant impression that some Wigan fans now have of the town.

Why? Most folk on here agree that the majority of Wire fans are pretty good natured,but you have a bad element who come out when the big derby games are played.

A few supporters are quite entitled to be upset after this ordeal mate, but they are not slating the majority of Wire fans. Everyone is acknowledging it's the minority.

Yep!! He got punched/ kicked to the ground then they set his shirt on fire!! Luckily some Wigan fans pulled the shirt off him and stamped the fire out.
