| Quote ="8inarow":3kye79ahIf MM and SW can just get Fielden, Coley and Prescott playing a bit better than last season and get Feka fit then we'll have as good a set of props as anyone. Yes Peacock may be better than any of the four we have, but we have real strength in depth at prop IMO.
I don't expect massive improvements from any player next season (apart from in fitness terms), but we don't need massive improvements. We weren't a million miles away last season, despite the awful inconsistency and poor conditioning and tactics...A small improvement from each player in the squad will close the gap on Saints and possibly even Leeds. Fielden has a key role to play in this as he has been underperforming. He may not be capable any more of world class performances, but if he can recover some of that lost ground, then it would be an important piece in the jigsaw next season.'"
But it is simply not realistic to expect him to suddenly come out and fall back into the form of 4/5 years ago,
What we should hope for from Fielden are good performances week in week out, being more dominant in defence and offering more going forward.
I hope MM takes his game apart and rebuilds it going forward so that he simply gets back to basics, he has always in his prime relied on his footwork, but defences have improved personally I would ask him to concentrate on his body angle at impact and work to find his front.
For the last few years he has gone in far too upright got held up, pushed back and dominated on the ground. Indeed the only glimpses of life we have seen from him has been when he has taken a wide step into contact giving him a good base and seeming able to bump a player off, but sadly he has lacked the power to continue forward as his momentum is stopped and he ends up running sideways or backwards and having to offload.
Hopefully with superior conditioning Fielden can become an asset going forward rather than a momentum killer which he often has been.

Really? I think we're shot for props to be honest. We have one on the wrong side of 30 who was only average even at his peak, one former superstar who has had about 5 good games in the last three years, one impact player who has gone worse every year he's been here and the rest are young and unproven. Our best prop wouldn't make the England train on squad. If one thing lets us down in 2010 it'll be our go-forward in the pack IMO.

| I'm expecting a much improved showing from our pack in general and from Fielden in particular.
It's a real fresh start for him and i think he'll prove some people wrong.
wether some of them are big enough to admit they were wrong will be another question.
But the biggest reason i'm hoping for improvement will be because they will all be fitter and hopefully more inclined to work for one another.
I don't care what people think about certain players and their form, one of our problems has been that we have looked far too much for individuals to be so good that they can hide the fact that those around them are dead weight. By improving everyone the cream of the talent has the chance to rise.

The fact that at least three of our props are off contract at the end of next season could well work in our favour for the first half of the year. ( Fielden, Feca and Coley).
I expect our pack to be fitter and far more aggressive / rugged in their approach to the game playing a far more physical style of rugby than we have seen in recent times.

We don't have a single prop of international calibre and every other side I expect to see anywhere near the title does, Saints have Graham, Leeds have Peacock, Warrington have Morley, Huddersfield have Crabtree. Props who will dominate in every game and make their team big yards. We have Coley I don't think he'd even get a game at Leeds.

Why single out Coley?
I really don't get where all this Coley bashing has come from? IMO last season he out performed many of the props people on here have talked about siging-Griffin, Carvel and Leuleui at Leeds.
I've said it before and I'll say it again Coley would walk in 2 any SL side as their number two prop but the problem is he's not got a world class guy like Morley or Peacock in front of him 2 make him look amazing like many of the players I mentioned above have.
This site is crazy sometimes.... You get an ear bashing from certain sections for even daring to mention that Bailey isn't as good as he's hyped up 2 be or that Fielden and Roberts haven't thus far been good signings. But when a player like Coley actually does his job and has a very good season he's classed as not good enough?

I'm saying he's our best prop, but still wouldn't get in the Leeds team. If anything it singles out the rest of them. I like Coley but he's got too much work on his shoulders, hopefully next year we'll sack off Fielden and get a quality replacement.

Surely Fielden was our best prop of last year, didnt he make more tackles, Metre's and tackles bust with less carries. Than Coley. I've said all along we need to complement Fielden with another decent prop not get ride of him. Coley and Fielden starting @ 8 & 10 is a good start for me. Prescott & O'Carroll as the next pair. Feka needs to work a little bit harder IMO.

There is a 13 yards diff between Coley and Fielden in Fielden’s favour. Coley played one less game but made one more drive than Fielden.
The argument I’m making however is that Coley is bang on his game and is easily fulfilling the role he was brought in to do, that of the number two prop at the club. Coley was signed to take some of the pressure off an all singing and dancing Stuart Fielden and he’s expected to turn out the kind of performances he is doing.
In simple terms Coley is doing his job.
He would be an excellent number 2 for a world class prop like Morley, Graham or Peacock

I think that they are as well.
Coley imo was hands down the better prop than Fielden last season and i know a lot of people had Coley in their top three for a good few weeks of the season. But yet if you look at the stats Fielden could be seen as having the better season.
Maybe it's because i had very little expectations when it came to him but he really impressed last season imo.

There was defiantly talk of Saints looking at him as well as Wire.
Looking at the fact that Saints signed Fozzard who had a poor season last year it's not that of a stretch of the imagination to think they looked at him.
I honestly can’t see what peoples problems with the guy are?
Simple yes or no answer on last seasons performances would you take Coley over Leuleui? I would….

I haven't really seen enough of Leuleui to comment. From what I have seen I would say he too is average. I'm not saying Coley is a bad player just that he's average as is Fielden and Prescott.

| Coley would walk a game at Leeds as would Fielden and a fitter Paleaaesina.
All are better then Kylie Leuluai and Ryan Bailey.

It's interesting to know what people define as average. None of them are performing at the level of Peacock, Graham and Morley, but as a unit if you cut the stupid brain farts out a little bit they compare very favourably with the 'best' packs albeit a little on the light side (excluding feka ). Hopefully this season will see less brain farts and more size/power (or less size in the case of feka ) coupled with a bit more fire and a few technique improvements, then I wouldn't swap them (as a unit) for anybody else's in the League tbh.

| Another point for this season, will be a fit again O'Carroll and an emerging Ben Davies putting pressure on last season's starting 4 props.

Personally i think Mossop will push past both Prescott and O'Carroll this year to make a place in the 4 his own.

| I doubt Mossop getting past Prescott tbh as a prop.
I'm not saying he's not got the potential to do that but i just feel theres enough room in that backrow for Mossop to make a place his own. It doesn't look like Bailey will be playing in any of the pre season games so i'd expect Mossop to be getting his opportunities in the backrow initially and he's got the talent to nail down one of the 3 spots available(2 starting second rowers and a bench second rower).
He does look a good bet to be a prop in the long term though.
