| Its entirely up to him how far he can go but he will need to up his game considerably (and consistently) to be a hit in the NRL

| Where’s he going to play? Right sided half because Wighton plays on the left and I can’t see him being shifted for Williams.

| When on top form Williams is a fabulous player IMO but I do have my doubts about how he’ll go. He seems a quiet sort of lad who needs reassurance of his abilities. He’s been inconsistent for us but I’ve always wondered how much of that is to do with two issues that shouldn’t be a problem over there. One is that he’s never really had a hugely dominant pack to play on the back of and the other is that I feel he mentally switches off because the league isn’t the most intense over here.
I shall look forward to watching how he goes and I hope he’s a success but it really is a 50/50 for me. His record in big games doesn’t fill me with a lot of hope.

I don't know why anyone would even care. He's gone now. Good luck to him, he's no longer a Wigan player. End of.
It's like wondering what your ex-girlfriend is up to...

| Quote ="Cruncher"I honestly believe that some folk have a blind spot where George is concerned.
There's no doubt about his talent or his physical prowess, but we've all seen him drift through matches that he could have have injected himself into a lot more.
He could have been so much better for us. I reckon we've seen him hit his straps 1 in every 3/4 games. Compare that to Hastings, who has micro-managed Salford's attack all year, and propelled them right to the top of SL by his own personal example.
I thought GW had all the tools when he first came on the scene. But we've only seen that in flashes.
Whether he'll replicate that in Australia, or quickly learn that it'll mean he gets dropped permanently, remains to be seen.'"
Spot on Cruncher, see you and me have similar mindset. We may not always agree but we speak our minds. Lots of people dont like to hear the truth.
Williams does not have the strength of mind to make it in the NRL. When he is faced with stiff defence and things are not going to plan, he drifts out of the game as he did V Salford when he should of stepped up and took the game by the scruff of the neck and demanded the ball.

| GW has the potential to flourish in the NRL. He is sometimes 2/3 plays in front of everyone else, sees things that others don’t and tries to put people in gaps they haven’t seen or have the speed to hit. That will all change in the NRL and he should have that calibre of player around him to hit those lines and balls and keep up with his vision.
That being said he’ll also be up against far more robust defensive lines and clever defenders, a huge challenge for any HB and IMO why we get Aussie HB’s over here shining whereas they’re a dim light in the NRL.
I agree with the poster who says he needs to stop drifting in and out of games so much and be more consistent as 1 good game in 3/4 is not good enough. He also needs to stop this running sideways across the defensive line so often, it may come off every now and again but it just looks poor and as though he doesn’t know what he’s doing most of the time. Sometimes it’s best to take the tackle or pass the ball to a runner to take the tackle, get set and go again.
He has got the talent and potential, of that there is no doubt in my mind but it’s up to him to drag himself up a level or 2 and stay at that level consistently.

Rubbish mate. Trying to put Williams failures down to him being 2/3 plays in front is the most comical excuse ive ever seen.
By your logic, no half back could ever play to their full potential in this Wigan team so Jackson Hastings will also look poor. How does Hastings look so good in the Salford team when they dont have any great players around him?

Probably because they have forwards who can make more than 20 metres a set

I kind of agree with this. But also find it hilarious that two of their props are Mossop and Dudson, as well as Greg Burke, Mark Flanagan etc. All players we’ve had at one point or another who weren’t good enough.

Unfortunately, I think this is a bit of an excuse too.
There've been many times in recent years during the George Williams era when we've been in the attack zone but have looked unable to score.
I don't disagree that our pack has long been due a drastic overhaul. But we make it to the opposition's line from time to time, and yet the perception fans have had is that we still lack cutting edge even then. And that is down to our pivots. George and his infamous 'Hail Mary ball' has been a particular problem here.
Anyway, the lad has now gone. The proof of whether he's overrated or has simply been used incorrectly will be in what happens in the NRL. I'll be watching with interest. I hope, for GB's sake, that he does a John Bateman and finds a comfortable home at the highest level, rather than a Ryan Hall and be found out as someone who was a big (but lazy) fish in a small pond.

| Bateman was nailed on to be a success - not many in this country thought otherwise. Williams though has huge holes in his game which could be exposed badly in the NRL. No long kicking game, not the best passing game and very inconsistent overall. Could work with the right players around him but 50/50 on whether he'll make it.

Seriously mate why do you even bother supporting Wigan? There’s not one positive post from you. Everything is negative and it’s becoming embarrassing.

He'll be back. not too many success stories when it comes to backs. I'm surprised Canberra even went in for him. Aussies churn out half backs, it's forwards they seem to be short of.

| I knew as soon as I saw this it would be a thread bagging Williams. A Wigan lad brought through the system who has won academy Grand Finals, played every level as a junior for his country, won young player of the year, scored a try every third game, won 2 Grand Finals as our first choice halfback, won a world club challenge and represented his country at the highest level.
22 assist this year
21 assists the year before
29 assists (top assist maker in that year - 2017)
He is 24 years old.
No greater expectation at halfback greater than at Wigan is there?

| It’s a sign of his talent that you’d still say he could’ve done more. He’s part of a group of mates who’ve all seemed to agree they’d like to play in the NRL at some point and maybe even together for the same club. That has meant all bar the ultimate competitor in Bateman have had spells of their heads looking elsewhere in their time with Wigan. Fantastic players on their day but heads in the clouds on others. I don’t blame them, as young lads with no kids, having an eye on spells playing in a beautiful country, in the best league in the world and with your mates sounds like a dream come true. It’s probably cost us as a side though as all have been inconsistent, with spells of ups and downs.
Maybe I’m being harsh but that’s how it’s always felt to me. Constant speculation surrounding Williams has done him no favours these last few seasons.

When Sam Tomkins left the first time around I was gutted. I’m honestly not bothered that George is leaving as we’ve signed a better player in Hastings (all going well). That tells me everything I need to know about how I feel about it.
George has been good for us and has come in for some unfair treatment from Wigan fans. But he isn’t in the same universe as Tomkins was before he left for the NRL.

I’d have loved to see him with Hastings but we certainly do look to have signed a better player. I feel Williams has had a raw deal from some of our supporters at times and in an era of us having a side that’s played the percentages, he’s been one of the very few out and out entertainers we’ve had but he like a couple of his good mates have had an eye on the exit door and it’s been to the detriment of their consistency.
I’m sad to see him go and wish him well. I hope he reaches his huge potential because I certainly don’t feel he’s done that yet.

Hard to argue with this. Sam Tomkins was a true world beater when he left. I'd go as far as to say the best attacking FB I've ever seen at Wigan.

I still put Sam Tomkins (first spell with us) down as the 2nd most exciting/attacking British born player ever to play for Wigan (1st being Hanley).

| I think once Williams gets behind a better pack at Canberra we will see a different player. He still managed to stand out playing behind our pack which is one of the poorest in the league.
