Maybe because its illegal and most fans dont want to be given a bad reputation by a minority.

| I bet the smoke bomb looked wicked.
Are they actually illegal? There seems to be a grey area around these. Either way, I think people need to calm down a bit. I could understand the reaction if it was a flare, or a firework, or a big stick with a fire on the end.

That would normally be the big plume of smoke.

Is it? I thought flares and fireworks are banned due to fire hazards..I dont think a smoke bomb is a fire hazard.

| In football, setting off a smoke bomb will give you a 3 year banning order from all football games.
They are not permitted in British stadia

| its not a fire hazard is a health and safety one,
smoke bombs seem to be dependent on local law, some places will let you have the others wouldnt

| European teams have flares and smoke bombs in masses in stadia, with no problems. There is never any trouble surrounding them is their?
And I know European H.a.S is lot less stricter than over here, but why? is it because they realise that they aren't such a problem?
Our government has gone way ott on this whole H.a.S thing IMO.

Well at the end of the day its illegal here and I dont think that just because you want it then other wigan fans should just accept that we should stand back and allow a minority to give the majority a bad reputation.
I dont see a problem with this brigantes thing but try and operate within the law.

| I think the problem is that the Brigantes started off on here as a group of like-minded fans with fantastic intentions, but when stood/sat at a game everyone located near the flags is suddenly an "ultra" and the name gets linked to negative things, such as the smoke bomb. I couldn't make it to Hull KR but I'd imagine that it wasn't someone who goes to the meetings/donated towards the flags that took the smoke bomb, but it's seen as the Wigan Ultras breaking the law/stadium rules etc. As has been said already, if things like this continue to happen I'd imagine it wouldn't bode well for the Brigantes movement.

| As long as the club are made aware by the flags guys that it had nothing to do with them (as I assume it wasn't - I didn't go to Hull KR) then they will be okay. Obviously anyone with one in future should be identified and details sent to the club.

this is my point!
I wasn't at Hull KR and people can play it down as much as they want - all the hard work is going to end up with nothing and it makes me mad. I have been told who it was but didn't see with my own eyes - if I was there and did I would have reported to the club and I stand by that fact.

| Your big mistake was originally calling them the 'Ultra's,' which is a name for one of the most notorious football hooligan gangs in this country. For info, smoke bombs are illegal and flares are illegal, and dangerous, especially where there are large crowds, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs their head seeing to.
Named groups amongst spectators in sport tend to be seen as a hooligan element, even if they aren't. They are created with good intentions, but tend to attract the wrong type of person.

For example Wire's "Barmy Army?"
I know of someone from Warrington (who I believe is on this site and was in the thread that resulted in Wire Wonder's dismissal) who uses the "Barmy Army" as an excuse to be an apparent hooligan (he is a compulsive liar so I dont know if anything is true) however if you think that there has been any hooliganism then feel free to ask me his information etc and I will happily tell you who he is and they can investigate. Anyway it would seem that this "barmy army" is used as an excuse for hooligan behaviour can I ask if the group started in good will like Ultras or if its just non-existent and he's simply a compulsive liar?

Barmy army is the collective name for those that can be bothered to chant, the one you're looking for are 'the casuals' or nobheads as most sane fans call them.

I don't know why but "set of Bàstards" made me chuckle, maybe if that'd been used rather than ultras all along we'd be better off
