|
That would all depend on what King's expectations are. If he's prepared to be a squad player (i.e. not automatically first choice) and take a salary that reflects that then I could see Wigan considering it given how well he did in 2023.[/quote:3s1dckxm]
I think you're right. He will drop in money but would he drop down to being on squad player money? If other offers were on the table then probably not. He's somebody worth keeping an eye on. One thing that certainly isn't a worry nowadays is his fitness. He seems to have turned in to a fitness fanatic away from the field, which certainly didn't look the case in the year or two before his loan move at Wigan.

|
It might well be that a large salary will be required to get an NRL player over here.
With the NRL expanding to PNG, NZ and Perth possibly in the next few years then those clubs are going to be looking for top quality players to add to their locally produced squad.
If they are looking at squads of 25 players each then that is a lot of players who can further their careers in the NRL without having to leave the comp.
The RFL/SL are going to have a look again at the criteria for SL status. Surely each SL club is going to have to prove they can produced their own squad. A move I'd have thought is that within two years of attaining SL status a club must have a scholarship, academy and reserves to complement the first team. That way each club will be capable of producing the required number for their first team squad.
That would leave us less vulnerable to the need for overseas players to make up the SL quality squad which is the case now.
How Mike Danson would look at quality overseas players and the salaries required remains to be seen. He will know better than us how much Latics soccer players earn for League One and Championship competitions. [b:1nxdy2wp]Compare than to the Wigan RL players who play in front of 15k each game then he might look quite favourably on Rugby League.[/b:1nxdy2wp][/quote:1nxdy2wp]
He already does, he is a rugby fan first and foremost.

| I think there still value to be had finding you get players who aren't getting a start due to the likes of Ponga, Clearly, etc.
For example I think David Armstrong for Leigh will be the signing of the year, tempted to have a MoS bet on him at 33-1
As others have mentioned, wigans track record of treating overseas players well and giving opportunity to develop their careers will act in our favour when we do need to sign new talent. I think up and coming players rather than big names is the way forward..

Leigh probably have the master of picking up these gems in Adrian Lam. He's played a big part in getting Field, French, Ipappe, O'Donnell, Amone etc over to superleague and all have been exceptional. You wouldn't be at all surprised to see Armstrong being the next success story.

|
Out of interest, how much do they pay to play at the stadium?[/quote:c0ldtz90]
£500k per year
Then we obviously earn whatever sales come from food and drink. The pitch was £1.3m so it’s a good relationship on both sides.

Sounds like a great deal for Saints.
