From what I remember, there was a big clamour from Wigan fans for Maurice to extend his contract, because Wigan had moved into the ascendancy after the early season had been all about how Bradford were going to bully every team into submission, Wigan went to Odsal and beat them, and Frank goes "this is a team that thrives on intimidation, and we don't get intimidated", that changed the balance of power, and then Wigan ended up top of the league and Frank got coach of the year.
Maurice kept stalling on giving him a new deal...then in the end he decided to go for it and give him an extension late in the 2000 season, but looking back now you could see that Maurice only ever saw Frank as a stop gap while he had his sights set on bigger things.
Bigger things for Maurice were Stuart Raper and then Maurice started signing all his old favourite Aussie players, Julian O'Neill, Jamie Ainscough, Vaealiki and all those average players who sent Wigan into the shadows of Saints and Bradford for a while.
