Injuries aside, Brian McDermott said we were planing to win the whole competition when questioned at the fans forum and to be honest, I can't see anything other than 4 more losses and 12th place. The squad is paper thin and we are lucky that we face 2 teams that are below us in the table in our run in, but depression is setting in after a season that promised so much.
Recruitment for next year, we are told, is well under way and let's hope that we can attract (afford) the calibre of player needed to get us into the 8 next year.
As for Brian McDermott.........I think he is a good fitness coach, but I am starting to have doubts about his technical and strategic abilities. We seem bereft of ideas and I believe that other coaches simply instruct their teams not to make mistakes and wait for us to make them......hardly brain surgery. Bradford ripped us assunder down our left flank on Saturday.....something they were trying to do the weekend before, so why was this not worked on?
Is the coach taking out his frustrations on the players because his plan for the season isn't panning out by having what sounds like a pretty full on session on the Thursday before the game?
Danny Ward is doubtful and Karl Temata (knee), Danny Orr (quad) and Chad Robinson (knee) have all been ruled out, whilst David Howell will miss the rest of the season due to a fractured eye socket in training last week.

| All is not lost.
If we beat Salford and get a few bodies back for the last few games (and those that have just come back get fitter), we still have a chance of making the eight.
Lose Saturday and realistically, that's it for the year.
I'm not giving up hope yet.
Come on you Quins!

An excellent idea. Attending at the moment feels more like a duty to be endured, and not something to look forward to.

You think he's a good fitness coach??? You "believe" other coaches instruct their teams not to make mistakes??? What, do we tell ours to make them?
Flogging teams in training after a defeat is very commonplace. And guess who'd have done it. Not the coach.
Your post is based on assumptions and fantasy. Shown by the fact you think he does player fitness.

| Plus, contact sessions aren't the same as fitness sessions. I'd think it was reasonable to be doing contact two days before a game, probably not having King William flog them - which would be Monday or Tuesday most likely.
Judging by our left hand defence, more contact training is required rather than less.
We have looked jaded on occasion this year, but there's a number of factors that may contribute to that - from injuries (and the Chad looked like he was still carrying) to contracts, regardless of the training regime.
Obviously BM needs to manage that to get results, and I'd be loath to say he's not doing so - we won away after all.

The Job title "Head Coach" should point you in the direction of where the buck stops
FWIW, I am well aware that Bill Peden holds the job title of strength and conditioning coach, I also know that he answers to the Head Coach and as Brian seems to very adept at wearing his heart on his sleeve, I am of the opinion (which differs to yours...it's allowed) that after beating Bradford 2 weeks ago, a full contact session with a few walking wounded wasn't the way to go. Can't remember Gafa missing that many tackles in a season, never mind a game, so could it be that he's tackled himself silly on Thursday? I don't know. But I know something wasn't right!

What opinion did I offer of the bradford game or the training regime itself? NONE.
You can have and offer as many opinions as you like.
The head coach is not the fitness coach as you called him. And your comment that other coaches instruct their teams not to make mistakes is a laughable comment to be honest. As a result you showed a lack of knowledge on how things happen off the pitch re coaching and conditioning in your post.

I'm hardly an expert on things at Quins, how can I be? I do work on the coaching staff in Aussie RL and know how clubs work. Things in general are the same as in the UK. That's a presumption based on people I know who have both played and worked in the UK, not a fantasy.
However, here is a genuine offer. If you (and/or Gutterfax) ever come over here I'd be more than happy to spend time with yourselves showing you round some training sessions and take you behind the scenes of a club and at games.
I don't tend to label people as you do if they do or don't agree with me.

I offered an opinion that as Head Coach, Brian McDermott lacked ability in certain areas, but not in fitness. The way I said it was incorrectly worded (maybe), but it doesn't change the fact that IF it was his decision to have a full contact session when we had only just started to get players off the treatment table, I believe it was a mistake.
Arguments could also be made that out lack of defence and a lack of attacking ideas can be put down to Latham Tawhai or Rob Powell, but as I pointed out, the buck stops with the HEAD COACH!
I have never pretended to be an officiado of League and have kept most of my posts directed at the business side of the club, but felt that IMO the team looked bereft of ideas on Saturday.
On your offer to me and Listy...I will soon be residing next door to you in New Zealand (well...4hrs away) and am sure I will be able to convince the Missus to attend a few games across the pond.

I know. You're more than welcome. You can bore me about marketing and I can bore you aboutt training.
3hr 40 from Auckland. 2 hrs 30 to Auckland. Figure that out???
As an aside. Souths did full contact training (in protective suits) on Friday evening the day before their game last weekend.

Dire performances like the one last Saturday have in the past coincided with several of the squad being informed they will not be around next season. Anyone know when decisions were / will be taken on the players out of contract at the end of the season ?

| Is anyone else a little more positive now they have had 6 days to forget last saturday?
No?
OK, then look at the table. A win tomorrow puts us in 7th place. and a decent win of 20 points or more (I know this may be too optimistic and unrealistic but I wouldnt have bet on Cas losing by 64 tonight) we will move to a temporary 6th spot, until Wakey host the Crusders on Sunday anyway.
So can we all cheer up a little bit, we are back in a play off places, and apart from Castleford, all the teams we have to play between now and the end of the seaosn are currently below us.
Also I am suffering from man flu so I may not be able to give my usual toneless shouts tomorrow, can everyone else make a bit of noise for me?

They may not instruct there players not to make mistakes(although they do both directly- dont offload 10 meters out etc and indirectly by bring them off after mistakes etc) but there are potential solutions to reducing errors made by players, such as implementing a conservative game plan, using experienced players to bring the ball out under pressure, not offloading in certain situations.....
For the record Anderson at Saints used to do fitness sessions then do ball handling skills to get the players used to playing and concentrating tired. What is the purpose of that, other than reducing errors/mistakes?
The more I think about this the more I think your talking rubbish. Of course the coach instructs the team not to make mistakes. He will work with individuals on improving skill shortages within there game, sub units ie marker defence/sub unit defence and general team strategy both offensive an defensive. As for McDermott being the fitness coach- You dont have to shoot the gun to be responsible for the death. He may not shout go/stop but he will have worked out the training plan with his team of coaches which will include fitness.
Out of curiosity which club do you coach at?

Any coach can take a fitness session. Anyone with a Level 1 (or not) can do that. The plans for the season are drawn up by the Fit/Con person. Generally the buck stops with him. If something particular needs to be added, it can be. ie. longer, tougher sessions (floggings).
As for the not making mistakes comment. It was GF that said "other coaches" tell their teams not to make mistakes. It was worded as though this was something we wouldn't. That was the comment I was referring to. I think you may have taken my comment to GF out of context. Of course coaches tell them to hold onto the ball and not make mistakes. Once they cross the white line. It's down to them, not the coach. But the coach is the one that cops it at the end of the day and will get the boot.
As for the comment in bold, do you not think that the Quins would do that?
As for coaching. Who said I coached? Though I am ARL level 1 (and Trainer L1) but don't coach where I am at Norths (Rabbitohs feeder club) in NSW Cup. Nor would I want to coach TBH. It's a thankless task most of the time. Just read all of the boards on every RL site.
