| The George Hotel has been shut down, all its staff made redundant and guests turfed out.
I guess its up to the new Administrators to decide its future, but what a shame it would be if we lost one of Huddersfield iconic buildings.
Not sure what this means for the RL Heritage Centre which was situated in the hotel.

Obviously its not going to get demolished. It could be converted into flats though.

| 2nd time in under a year folk have been turfed out. Never mind I'm sure it can be turned into a series of pound shops like every other building in the town centre.

| I don't understand why the council allowed new hotels to be built when existing ones (Huddersfield Hotel and George Hotel) were always going to suffer.

They should save the entire hotel. Maybe move part, if not all, of their base from Red Hall to here.

| I know a few people have suggested the RFL occupy it as some form of headquarters - has the guest accomodation and functions rooms etc.....seems too big a part of the game's history to let it go.

| I am afraid it is going to be too much of a cash drain for anyone.
According to trip advisor it is only the 13 th best of 15 hotels in Huddersfield. Limited parking and decaying decor.
Tried to market itself too upmarket when it is not an upmarket place. Apparently only 3 star and charging £100 a pop not much future in that.
Why stay in a decrepid building in Huddersfield at 4 or 5 star prices.
Why stay in Huddersfield Town centre at all.
Huddersfield is becoming more of a dump everyday Sad but true.

Only going on what my family say and others post.
Shops closing down to be replaced by pound shops.
Cheap takeaways cropping up everywhere.
Jobs being lost.
Historical buildings being left to rack and ruin
A council who seem unable to organise a p up in a brewery and other than cutting staff has no ideas for dealing with the budgetary difficulties it faces.
In some way no different to what is happening in large numbers of other towns and cities in the north BUT there seems to be nothing that says this is our plan to get out of it.

| Look across the square at the Brittania building to see what could happen to the GH.
After the building society pulled out of the Britannia in the mid noughties, the upper floors became private apartments, most of which are empty as of now apparently. One side of the ground floor is a dental practice, the other side after being unused ever since the YBS pull out, there are now plans for an Indian restaurant to open, but the civic society will have a big say as to if that goes ahead due to planning permission needed for structural changes.
The RFL could occupy some space in the GH,maybe the heritage centre, the founders bar above it and take some office space, but don't see them buying up the whole of the building.Doubt that could be feasible to them.Car parking space is indeed very limited.
As has been stated, not that many years back, they would have demolished the GH in the name of progress,at least we are more enlightened now so will be spared that fate.
Empty buildings in the town's 'jewel in the crown' square doesn't leave a good impression on visitors though.

But the RFL are very concerned about the History of our sport, they buy up Iconic Stadiums and everything!
On a serious note the RFL buying the George as a future base (they have a lease at Red Hall) makes much more business sense than buying Odsal (more acurately buying the lease for Odsal).

£1.4M the price for the RFL to buy the GH.Compares quite favourably to the amount they paid for the lease on the 'iconic stadium'
The council leader though seems to think that with some modernisation, the building could still be viable as a hotel.
Worst thing about this saga is that the GH employees have been thrown on the dole queue at the drop of a hat,not to mention people who have paid large amounts of cash up front for future functions there and now it would seem have lost that money.
The heritage centre is protected by a steel roller shutter door and frame, someone would have to go hard at it with a sledgehammer for a good while in order to get access,so all the artefacts in there are safe, plus they are saying there is a 24hr guard on the whole complex.

| i wonder if uncle ken would be interested, along with ( possibly) the RFL and other wealthy leagueites?
surely if odsal stadium can be saved by the powers that be, then the very building the game as founded at surely is more iconic than any stadium will ever be?
wonder if mr stephenson might be looking into anything with his friends in high places?
surely as a rugby league fan of any club the george hotel simply cannot be allowed to be forgotten!

Pay £1.4million for it and then do what? If you want to keep it as hotel you'd seriously need to invest in a modernisation plan, you'll still suffer a lack of parking.
I feel for those who had booked to stay in this iconic RL venue.
