| Here is a review courtesy of BILKO on Cherry and White ( Wigan forum)
=#0000BFWell today was "Fan Day" at Orrell so the Co-Operative Stadium was far busier, and nosier, than it normally is. Have to say I thought it was an excellent little event for the youngsters to enjoy, although a bit dry for my liking. Beer sales would have been appreciated!
Glad the sun turned out in force as well. Ended up quite a decent day for it after a miserable few weeks.
The Under 20s match saw Wigan name a strong side with Cameron Phelps, Amos Roberts and Eamon O'Carroll filling up the over age quota, whilst Shaun Ainscough returned having not been picked to play for Widnes against Sheffield on Thursday.
It was a scrappy, and even, first half I thought with two late tries helping flatter the score in Wigan's favour. The second half was an excellent exhibition with Phelps and Roberts both looking in good form.
Not much happened in the opening minutes until Tom Spencer was sent over close to the posts in the 13th minute. That allowed an easy conversion from Josh Veivers to make it 6-0.
Huddersfield though came back strongly from that try. After forcing a drop out, hooker Josh Barlow scored a close range sneak over try from which Danny Ansell missed an easy ish conversion.
But just like Huddersfield responded to a try, Wigan did the same. Two penalties put them right on the try line and Amos Roberts pass sent Cameron Phelps over in the right corner. Veivers couldn't convert so the score was 10-4 after 23 minutes.
Wigan should have increased that lead soon after. Stuart Howarth and Roberts combined well but the final pass that would have seen (Number 16) claim a try was knocked on.
Huddersfield punished that by claiming their second try up the other end. Nice kick to the right corner looked to have been batted forward by Aaron Briggs but the ref called play on and Joe Parkinson won the race to the ball. Ansell again missed the conversion, leaving Wigan 10-8 ahead.
I think that score would have been a fair reflection on the half but Wigan claimed two late scores to flatter the score a bit. The first was a lovely effort. Sam Powell collected his own chip over the top kick and sent the supporting Howarth in close to the posts. Then in stoppage time, after Wigan had forced a drop out, (Number 16) was sent in close to the posts. Veivers converted both efforts. In between those two tries Huddersfield had been a bugs dick away from scoring themselves, which went to highlight that the 22-8 half time lead was not that reflective of the game so far.
The second half saw Wigan step up a gear or two and once Roberts scored on 49 minutes the floodgates opened. Ainscough had created the territory with a quick play the ball after a half break and a kick from Powell saw Roberts collect and score in the right corner. Veivers conversion making it 28-8.
Another Powell kick forced a drop out on 56 minutes from which his pass sent Phelps over for his second try of the afternoon. Took some scoring, he had men to beat in the process of going under the sticks. Easy conversion - 34-8.
Next try for Wigan came on 63 minutes. Massive break up the middle from deep by Ryan King saw him hauled short of the line but a quick play the ball allowed Logan Tomkins to send Veivers over before adding the extras to make it 40-8.
Huddersfield then claimed a try back. Kyle Wood with a big break up the middle and Josh Barlow in support just about finished to claim his second. Possible double movement in my view. Ansell finally converted a try - 40-14.
Another Huddersfield break could possibly have been finished in the right corner by winger Greg Johnson but chiming at the line he pulled up with a hamstring injury. He went straight off the park and the break died with Wigan getting their defence reset.
The final ten minutes saw three further tries from Wigan. The first of the trio saw them score from 80 metres in two tackles. First Matt Russell broke right up the middle from his own 20. He was caught thirty metres from the try line but a quick play the ball saw Roberts scoot under the posts. Conversion made it 46-14.
Huddersfield tried a short kick off but kicking to the tall Iain Thornley was a bit daft. He collected the ball and eventually a chip kick from Phelps was collected by Roberts and he sent King over. Nice effort and with King rounding the break off under the posts, another easy conversion for Veivers made it 52-14.
Final try came in stoppage time and again Phelps was the architect. His kick to the right corner was on a plate for Ainscough to score from. Veivers couldn't convert this time, leaving the final score 56-14.
This win means Wigan have cemented at least third in the table. The Under 20s still use the old Super League Top 6 play off system which means 1st and 2nd will get a week off before playing off for a place in the Grand Final, whilst 3rd will play 6th in an eliminator game at home.
Wigan still have faint hopes of finishing 2nd but they need Warrington to lose to both Wakefield tomorrow and Hull next Friday, whilst claiming their own win in the final game of the regular season at Hull KR next Saturday.
That scenario is not likely so expect Wigan to be playing either Bradford or Wakefield in an elimination game at Orrell on Saturday 4th September.
