I don’t want to decry or be negative about what the board or associated people have done for the club from where we were a few weeks ago and what we were facing. However after the recent announcements and Wednesday LISA meeting personally I feel we have missed a massive branding, product awareness and revenue opportunity with our 2012 shirt.
Like many other supporters of this club I am very grateful for the people and organisations that paid monies to go in the draw to be our main 2012 shirt sponsor. I think there were 18 names on the list, a draw took place for one of them to be the main 2012 shirt sponsor Widdows Mason being the successful winner.
All above board wonderful, or is it?
I looked at the list and one name really stood out for me, a brand name that is recognised globally that Leigh Centurions would be associated with for the 2012 season, perhaps beyond!
Yes you guessed it TESCO and in the light of today’s announcement by the club it makes more sense than ever. Let me explain.
I don’t doubt Widdows Mason are a reputable company of solicitors many people would say like they did at the LISA meeting it makes sense to have them as 2012 shirt sponsor for the Centurions. I think you will all agree many people will recognise their name around Leigh and surrounding area.
But step out of the Leigh area and people would not have a clue or for that matter be interested in the shirt sponsor.
Change that to a different sponsor namely TESCO and wow I think everyone would know who they are from the length and breadth of the UK to around the globe! We would be associated with a global brand something the majority of super duper clubs don’t have and would die for!
The leverage and opportunity this possibly could bring having TESCO as our 2012 shirt sponsor is phenomenal to say the least.
Being a sales director in corporate organisation to have this type of opportunity in front of me like the Centurions have is a dream come true! It gives us instant brand recognition on a scale a club like Centurions can only dream of, perhaps once in a life time.
Trevor Barton was really excited last night about today’s launch of people buying goods and services through the Centurions website that the club launched today. He talked about the site traffic (hits to the centurions website) and how good it was etc, I think he quoted 2 million hits.
Brilliant but what could it be?
If Tesco were our 2012 shirt sponsor, I thank the person who introduced them to the club as it gives the club the opportunity to talk with TESCO with a different perspective. What could the hits be if TESCO made an announcement on their website something along the lines of........
“TESCO are proud to announce their 2012 shirt sponsorship of Leigh Centurions a founder member of rugby league. The Centurions are an integral part of the Leigh community in conjunction with the TESCO community promise in actively supporting local communities.
To find out more about the Centurions visit their website at www.leighcenturions.com
If we just gained 0.1% of hits from the TESCO website you are talking a phenomenal increase to the Centurions website on a UK possibly global basis. Link that with buying products the numbers are simply staggering. (Yes I have worked them out) You would be surprised the amount of people who visit the TESCO website on a daily basis and what that could do and mean to the Centurions and Leigh as a community!
I would like to think if members of the board read this they do at least think about it perhaps do something about it because done properly this could represent a significant revenue and branding opportunity for the club and Leigh as a community!
Act locally but play globally you know it makes sense!
Just think we might even see the Leigh Centurions 2012 shirt for sale in Tesco Wigan!!!!!!!!!

| Yes you are quite right
But Tesco's like all the rest were only willing to contribute a set amount of money , therefore to have given them more ' respect ' than the others would have been wrong ethically
This is their 1 st season of sponsorship , others have ' committed ' to us for years , and will continue to do so long after Tesco's stop doing so
The real answer to your point is that all the Championship clubs should be actively seeking a major shirt sponsorship deal for all the clubs collectively , one day hopefully it might just happen

| Tesco offered £1k like the other 17 clubs, giving Tesco the deal for £1k wasn't an option.
As for Tesco releasing an official statement on wining the sponsorship, I doubt anyone significant even has a clue they are even sponsoring us!!
Should I be wrong above then there is still nothing them actively promoting the fact they are sponsoring a players shirt this year. In not sure which player they have drawn.

| Also worth mentioning that it wouldn't be Tesco as a company sponsoring us as such and rather would be taken from the budget allocated to Tesco Leigh, or at least that's my understanding of it.

| If memory serves me correctly, I think they've got the No 17 shirt.
I think you will find, 'bo48' that the club has already tried for a bigger sponsorship deal from Tesco, (and Morrisons) but that they are not interested. Matt is probably right in saying that this is a Tesco, Leigh store, deal. They can identify with the Centurions' desire, to be a community focal point.

| Having spoken to the community lady at Tesco (Rachael), I know that she has been given a budget to spend on community projects and as far as I know this £1000 came out of that budget.
I think it's great that they're getting involved but they only paid the same as everyone else so it's only right that they weren't given special treatment. I just hope that the other supermarkets realise what a mistake they're making by not sponsoring and hopefully join in next year.

| I work for Tesco and Matt, Alan and Mishmash are right, its all from a 'local' budget.
As for putting it on the website, it would get lost in amongst the thousands (I kid you not) of other projects they are involved in.
Its good to dream though, who knows, one day!!!!

| Perhaps I have not communicated this too well.
I have dealt with Tesco over many years if you can agree the right criteria they will commit, clue in how to get what you want is on the back of a store underperforming, (think about that one) the community and what it means to Tesco.
I was in Welwyn Garden City last week, Tesco head office with two of their senior directors. Both were surprised that Leigh Centurions had not approached them given their new store and the financial position of the club. Yes they knew about the local approach but as they said you won’t get much locally it needs to be done through head office.
One of the main men at Tesco is a big rugby league fan why do you think Wigan Warriors got £3.5m from them!
I am not criticising anyone, just trying to give somebody a big hint/tip. If it wasn’t for a conflict of business interest I would do it myself.
Oh well one can only try and hope somebody gives it a go.

Speaking to Tescos was discussed by the Proffessional Support Group , but I would assume ( possibly wrongly considering your post ) that the club would approach the local store initially , and then be directed to Head Office , if this is not how it works then thank you for your information , I will try to pass it on

| Somebody needs to call Tesco in Welwyn Garden city, aimed at director level. Make sure who ever does it they have a plan focussed on what it will mean and do for Tesco. Community integration and welfare is at the top of their agenda.
Good luck this will not be easy but if you are successful it could ease a lot of finacial pressure on the club.

| Pedantic mode on: Tesco H/O is based in Cheshunt, not Welyn Garden City. Pedantic mode off.
To have Tesco as main club sponsor would undeniably be of great benefit to the club, not least in assisting to bring in other high profile partnership deals.
However I doubt the directors would of been hopeful of securing a £25k+ main shirt sponsorship by dealing soley with the community team at the Leigh store.
Perhaps a request was made/re-directed centrally through the correct channels and subsequently turned down ? We do not know.
Let's be honest, Tesco will be first on the list of most sports clubs (at all levels of sport) along with various charities nationally seeking sponsorship. They will receive numerous such requests annually. They can not support each one everytime but that's not to say we do not try again in the future.

| We play in a stadium without a naming sponsor - maybe if the club can help broker a deal with Tesco we can get a large discount on our match day costs.
Got to be worth looking in to.

| Whist not knocking the poster a couple of key points
1) Wigan got 3.5m for the release of central park under a long contract
2) There is no way executive directors of Tesco have the time to deal with random calls from sporting organisations for sponsorship. They would never do their job!
Scope for a better agreement with Tesco is there but it's not as simple as picking up the phone with a plan and asking for a director.

| Ok last time I post on this.
Yes I know Tesco has a head office in Chestnut Hertfordshire been there many times. However, if you want something the M.A.N (Money, Authority and Need) resides in Welwyn garden City.
Wigan received £3.5m in direct sponsorship money additional undisclosed monies were paid for the lease on Central Park and the purchase of the land, how and where do you think monies came from to help Whelan build the DW Stadium?
On point 2 I totally agree and like others have said Tesco must get hundreds of calls each day for sponsorship from all sorts of organisations not just sporting ones.
Difference for Leigh Centurions unlike many other organisations Tesco have a multi million pound stake in this town that can’t fail. Have you been in Tesco Leigh recently? Last time I went in there was more staff than customers, unlike their nice friends at Asda which was as busy as usual and soon to be joined with more competition from some more nice friends Morrisons.
How long do you think that will go on? Not long Tesco are ruthless on underperforming stores as all market leaders are. All of a sudden the community commitment is high on the Tesco agenda along with marketing and promotion. Let me think who can help them with that?
Hey I am sure one or two Tesco directors will want to talk about an underperforming investment, lack of market presence more competition. Tell me what else do directors talk about? Ah yes a plan to put the business right. Remember I said we need a plan.
You know what they might even still say no, probably will but we will adapt the plan until the man from Del Monte says yes! How do you think other clubs and organisations do it?
This is an opportunity is all I am saying, for personal and business reasons as much as I would love too I can’t take this on at the moment.
I am only too well aware of how much the club needs to attract and generate new revenues streams quickly. Let’s not be fooled or get carried away with recent announcements new and existing players along with fixed overheads have to be paid for and without new ideas and revenue the club won’t survive. Already this year the club is using a large percentage of its 2012 revenue from the RFL to pay for some of the 2011 season a financial hole that needs to be filled otherwise this time next year who knows where the club might be.

| I do hope 'bo48' will be passing on details of the specific director at Tesco HO who might be interested (the RL fan) - that way the club can target 'the MAN who can', rather than being passed from pillar to post by the Tesco commercial 'machine'.
