Does anyone remember a player for Leigh in the mid 1990s called David Riley when Ian Lucas was our coach???

Pretty sure it was the same Dave Riley who came through the Wigan ranks in the early 1990's. He went to Golborne comp and was probably 3 or 4 years above me.

No recollection of him , did he make a 1st team debut?.

94-96 a centre signed from Wigan, played around 20 games scored only a couple of tries

david riley is a close family freind of mine he did make his first team debut for us as a sub in 1994 he only played 0+2 apperances one was a 78-22 loss at batley and the other was a home defeat to hull kr 25-16, dave is now 34 and is happily married with kids. The centre in question is a lad called David wright a close freind of rileys david wright played about 30 odd games for us didnt score many trys though.

Slightly OT but I was recalling that very 78-22 loss with 'leyther1' last Sunday. The game IIRC was actually all square at H/T: 22-22



Back on topic, I do remember David Wright. We had a nucleus of players signed from the Wigan amateur scene during that period. Players such as Shaun Bannister, Neil Jukes and Mark McGughan. I also recall a young stand off by the name of Lee Cotton playing in the same side.

He (McGughan) Juksey and Rob Ball were three of the tallest back rowers in the league at the time

Dave Riley ?

Big prop who I loved smashing to bits when he was at Golborne. Decent boot on him though, but never good enough to play for Leigh.

Dave Wright? - Nice lad who was if anything a little overrated. Again not good enough but wore his heart on his sleeve.

Glyn Davies ? - Had the pedigree to be a top player. Superb as a youngster who should have done more with career than he did. His temper got the better of him at times but was the nucleus of the best U16's sides Leigh East will ever have.

You can tell this is my era ! I can tell a few tales abouts Mssrs, Rowley, Baldwin, Martin etc.

Who remembers Alan Robinshaw ?

Jeez, that era in the mid nineties were a mare !!



But to be honest, are probably the best away days I have ever had watching Leigh (except the 94-4 to Workington !!)

Anyone remember a player called Aaron Sawyer, an Aussie hooker, he was amazing!

I used to go to school with Alan Robinshaw, daft as a brush.

Glyn was a good Leigh lad, a pleasant fella if you know him - one of many who soon preferred beer and women than pro rugby.

On another slightly related topic, I have a copy of 'They Played For Leigh' which goes to the end of the 1990-91 season. Seems to me now would be a good time to bring a new copy out as it's 20 years out of date.

Sawyer was a scrum half along with Phil Johnson Andy Sullivan Dave Cruickshank and a couple of others wo all played in the same side in different positions
