Iv'e just been visiting a friend (yes I have got loads of friends) and been looking through this weeks journal and apparently Shandy Bass has been given some kind of an award by Macdonalds but in the write up it says "well known as Leighs fantastic supporter or something along those lines whilst completely forgetting to mention the fact that Shandy isn't a Leigh fan at all but a Mickey Higham fan he was a leigh fan when Mickey was there and a Saints fan when Micky was there and a Wigan fan when Mickey was there and is now a wire fan he was even a Bradford fan for a few hours once upon a time. I couldn't tell you what award he was presented with because whenever I see the name Macdonalds I lose all interest as during the 70s they used to contribute to the I.R.A. allegedley and also refused to recognise and have dialogue with the trade unions also allegedley ,but anyway he's codded everybody again

the IRA they contributed to wasn't the one to do with Ireland though it was another organisation with the initials IRA

As McDonalds is an American company, the wageslips that were handed out to employees of Mcdonalds in the 1970s had IRA printed on them. IRA actually meant 'Individual Retirement Account .' Nothing to do whatsoever with any Irish terrorist organisation.

This is all well and good for the press but the lad lives in the past on the ghost terraces of Hilton park and i find it all a little laughable at times .
Leigh's greatest fan for me is Tommy Sale ,hes help build the club played for the club and lives and breaths its every moment ,need i say any more.

I've seen him there a few times but dont know if he goes regularly. In fairness I think he went to watch us before Mickey played but admittedly has followed him since.

Maybe the club (or The Centurion? or LISA?? or this forum???) should run a feature called "Leigh's REAL Greatest Fans" and highlight some of the people who are genuinely great fans (as mentioned on the End of Season Awards thread) to take the limelight away from Shandy?

That way lazy journos will have other people to turn to when they need a token Leyther to quote/picture.

There are plenty of people on here alone who have outstanding achievements to earn them the tag of "Great Fan" ahead of Shandy Bass?!

Shandy bass is that great of a supporter, he wore a hat with the old logo on it at the farcical lights switch on.
I saw him boxing day wondering aimlessly around where the asda end used to be, i felt he needed sectioning.
One very sad individual indeed.

Obviously wrongly labeling this person a Leigh fan (never mind a loyal fan) is insulting to the ones that do actually make the effort. But the flipside is, this Mr Nobody has managed to get the club some local headline news focus that would not have happened otherwise because of his lets say strange ways

If I was a newcomer to the town thinking about taking the kids to watch that RL game played in that great stadium, having that cretin associated in any way would put me off.

Publicity about a food establishment being prosecuted for rats and cockroaches wouldnt encourage me to eat there

I think its just a case of the Reporter and Journal having absolutely nothing interesting to report for 47 of the 52 weeks in a year so they have to create stories. Personally I dont see the point in the newspapers anymore, who actually puts one of the free papers down and thinks 'What a good read that was!' (bar the sports section)
The only thing its good for is finiding a tradesman in an emergencey, having a nosey to see if anyone in your street has been to court, oh and your Grandma and Grandad seeing how many people they can outlive in the obituaries section.

Back to Shandy Bass, i was trying to get hold of some of Lee Harvey Oswalds old work mates last month to see if they had a free day for the turn on of the lights, but to no avail!

I think that people should really take note that this lad is not a full shilling and rather than pour scorn over anything he does he should really be pitied. I think the local rags see him as the village idiot and probably have a giggle over each others articles with him in. I have seen this kid around Leigh since I was 13 and have seen evil kids spit on him and beat him because of the way he is. Lets not be like those kids and let him have his bit of a crack.

Frank, Bert, Josie, even me, to name a few are "bigger" Leigh fans then him, however its not his fault the papers protray him to be the most fanatic fan.
