Agreed. Folk have short memories. We should have kept him. Any injuries to the back line and we'll be playing Minikin or Russell? to me that is a downgrade over Mamo.

he was offered a contract, he was just offered a better deal at castleford... its about prioritising cap space and quota spots.
so we were right to not chase him with a better contract offer, as the last few seasons have proved.

im not saying he isnt better than minkin... But minkin is backup on a MUCH smaller contract.... mamo went to cas on a big contract as a starting player taking up a quota spot... they are not the same thing at all.

It's all hypothetical, as it's only rumour and highly unlikely that a swap deal would take place. Then, there's cap space and quota spots to possibly navigate.

having said what i have said... i would still do a straight swap for Mata'utia if the deal was on the table.

| I like Mamo at the right price as backup, but for first choice centres I think we need to aim a little higher. Wrench seems every bit the future solution for one of the spots, but I'm not sure who will replace Mata'utia for 2024. I like the work Stef is putting in, but I'm sure even he understands he's not going to be the automatic choice next year.
The big problem is that the 'star' high-earning centre is already signed and employed. It's just a case of whether he'll come good at Wigan. He's not showing it at the moment, and that's before we even talk about addressing the attitude issue. If Wigan don't keep him I have no idea what we'll do. Maybe Price can tempt him to Australia to try his hand in the NSW or Queensland Cup, or whatever they call those leagues these days.

nothing wrong with rating him..... my point was it was laughable that we should be chasing a player and improving a contract offer, based on one good season.
i also have no insight on player wages.... but its obvious the 2 are not close to parity.

Sorry I didn't see the post where it was suggested that we offer an improved contract. Maybe it was deleted?

sorry, i think you must have misunderstood my confusing post.
At the time the departure was announced, people were saying that we should have done more to keep him.. and that not giving him a longer, more improved contract was a mistake.

We don’t need to look outside the club to replace anybody who does leave; we have quality players coming through who will step in over the next year or two

About 3-4 weeks from the last update if i remember. If i'm correct on that, then in the next 4 weeks we'll have Wrench, McGuire, Dudson and philbin all available again. So great back up to have

| Can I just be clear that when I started this topic I was not suggesting we sign him, but I would have kept him on rather than let him go to Cas. Let’s be brutally honest, I don’t think last season would have been any worse with Mamo in the centre rather than Pete M. (I’m also not blaming PM for the disastrous season).

| Interesting debate over whether you take a limited player with a good attitude or a more skilful one with a more erratic temperament.
Champion sides have a much higher quotient of players with good temperaments than erratic ones.

Oh there's a fair bit if revisionist history going on here, yes I get contract year form but he'd been good from 2020 into 21, he was an attacking threat that didn't need any set up just half a gap to make his own chances.
Did he ever throw crap passes like in that wigan game? I don't recall any, would I have him on the wing? Never, but you can't fault his play at centre, Austin didn't do him any favours defensively. Would i overpay him? Probably not but I would have kept him in favour of matautia who I'm still not convinced by.
Now off the field is another matter, I think im right in saying that all members of the prc have now left the club? Who were actually reported as being a set of mards behind the scenes.
That says a lot about that collective of individuals

I think this is something that Powell picked up very early when he joined the club. Cliques of players rather than a team. I have a feeling that's why he made a point of this 'next available seat' policy at lunch - where you can't just spend all your time with your established senior pals. I bet Wane (or Peet if you like) doesn't let King get away with that at Wigan though.
