People are losing the ability to talk to each other.

How many times in a pub do you see a group of friends not talking to each other but heads down in their smartphones.

It's quite sad really.

i don't know, i'm usually on my phone.

Albeit not much different to people (in the olden days) reading the paper, doing a crossword or reading a book in the pub or on the train, or those in the 80s with a Walkman in the street. Or those folk watching the rugby but listening to the racing/other sport on the wireless etc.

Nope - but it's the evolution from those earlier behaviours, one or two might have bought and read a paper (then passed it around), but the technological advancement measn they are all now likely to have a smartphone etc.

so what you're saying is on a Friday night, 5 lads would have been sat in the local, two would be reading a paper? wake up mate.

Even if what you say did happen the other three would still be talking to each other. you go into a boozer now and you'll notice the vast majority of those under the age of 30 are glued to their phones. the vast majority over the age of 30 are sat talking to each other, having the craic. even if they're watching sport they're still communicating.

Look around the south stand. all the teeny boppers and the young girls who go to hang round the lads. they're all stood on their phones. They've paid £20odd or whatever it is to watch a game and they're facing the other way on facebook half the time! it's Baffling.

How many times have you walked into a pub and seen a group of people all sat there listening to their own Walkman?

Hence my point that a book, paper or Walkman is nothing like a mobile phone. The mobile phone and the obsession with social media has killed off the ability of conversation for many young people. The book, paper or Walkman never did that.

Albeit you seem slightly obsessed in needing to prove your point here on 'social media'.

Shiny there really is NO need and your post, welcome though it is apart from the insult, is to say the least a bit ironic.

i was in a pub last night, sat in the window, watching the rain and sipping a blood orange IPA at 6.4% whilst reading a book, over to the right of me was a group of early 20 somethings, complaining to each other that the stout 2 of them had bought was nothing like guinness (not that they liked guinness either), other activities included talking about them all getting pubes, and then giving the middle finger through the window to one of their party who went outside, braved the rain to Vape.

Can't say i saw much phone usage though.

I think we all have different views and experiences and I originally thought it worth exploring that human behaviour is evolutionary and that we can understand things better if we learn from the past.

Terms such as 'bookish' and 'bookworm' came into use due to negativities associated with compulsive behaviours attached to reading, and I thought it was worth exploring that whilst the media is different, the behaviour might be in someway similar.

But now I think it's time to move on to the positive events and focussing on the CC Final.

Oh to be young again.
