He's an absolute disgrace for that but I can't help but feel he was instructed from above. Appalling decision (one of a few) but it hasn't overshadowed our appalling capitulation.

There needs to be irrefutable evidence to turn down an on field "TRY" decision. Unfortunately the grainy zoomed in low resolution video stills didn't yield that. They gave the impression but not irrefutable.

You don't think Sky couldn't have cleaned that image up?
Conspiracy theory...the conclusive evidence angle was purposely made to look blurred and out of focus.

I've only watched the highlights back tonight & the tv view wasn't as clear as the big screen view from the south stand. It was as clear as day that Tierney's hand had touched the line. So much clearer than the Catalans no try that Stevo was arguing over the other week.

Thought that myself, I do a lot of camera work and when you look at the normal un zoomed image the definition and clarity is pretty reasonable. However the close up image looked very poorly presented and distorted for some reason to give benefit of the doubt to the attacker and the on field decision. I think fans will make a note of it and see if there is a re occurrence in any future matches.

Whether Thaler's decision was wrong or wrong by being contrived by the powers that be the fact is we just capitulated in the most embarrassing manner thinkable and for that Mr Smith your fired!!!!

Also, there's some common sense to take place as well, his hand didn't just hit the grass and stayed in the same place when he planted it and then got shoved by two defenders his and and fingers slid on onto the line.

Thats why the rodney corner camera(long shot) made it look like his hand was inside the line(it was) but you can't see his fingers cos the grass isn't cut down like a football pitch.

In todays world of Camera super slow motion 4K HD imagery that can take in excess of 300 clips a second... Then why is it in a sport that can have a try ruled out by a blade of grass do we not have that technology. some of the camera footage used by the video ref is worse than the CCTV videos used on crimewatch!

No wonder Lockers was smirking from ear to ear. He would have had a better big screen view than us.

On field decision was TRY and the VR couldn't conclusively see whether or not the hand was on the line, hence couldn't over-rule the on field call.

I'd be more concerned about the poor goalline defence that failed to make a cover tackle.

I'm aware of the way decisions are views and decided try or no try. I'm just pointing out that there are cameras out there that can give you a crystal clear picture frame by frame. Rather than a blurred hand that may or my not be on the ball/in touch.

In all honesty this new system of try/no try on the field is causing more delays & disruption to games than enough. If a ref can give an opinion that he thinks a try is good or bad he should be able to make the ultimate decision without tv assistance. It is a gimmick too far.

IMO the video ref should only be there to check in touch and knock on. that's it

Checking offside proves reasonably reliable.

I'd be radical.
Give call sky subscription viewers a box, where they can enter their decision.

Clearly the existing system where the video ref consults with Eddie Hemming is no longer working.

That should be the sole responsibility of the linesman. keep the video ref involvement to absolute minimal

We could do with beefing up the role of the linesman. Their main remit seems to be looking for punches and checking conversions.

Or if you're James Child, run on waving your flag to call an offside so Sinfield gets a penalty 30 yards out on his preferred side and wins the play off semi final. There's still no doubt in my mind that 2011 was 'our year' our one real chance. We were unplayable.

Never before or after have we ever seen a linesman do that. But I digress... Yes I agree. linesmen need to be beefed up but not to much. the man in the middle should make all decisions bar offside. That should be the linesmans job. If the Linesman doesn't call it then the player should be deemed onside.

It looks like the referee, touch judge ( Not linesman, they were football officials), the square in the air judge and the match review panel all disagree with you RG. It wasn't a try worth 4 points never mind a penalty try. Just take satisfaction for your win, and the poor pixel resolution on sky camera work.

I think we need two or three video challenges per team per game just like tv can manage in cricket & tennis or like i said previously let the ref make decisions for tries with no video assist. A challenge would not necessarily be against the ref's decision but also the competence of the broadcaster/video ref.

Many of the comments here show why I think the decision should be left with the ref BUT he should have the technology available. Let the referee guide the rewind/playback, let him see it on the screen and let him make the decisions. Afterall, he is the person who knows exactly what he has a doubt over. "Can we check the grounding please?" .... you just wish that one day the video ref replies back "well it looked OK from here so what exactly do you think happened ?" (Unlikely I know as they often look at something 10-15 times and still miss it)

Is it just me or was the super zoom used at Leeds last night far higher resolution than what we had at our game last week? Seemed clear as a bell for that Leigh try last night!
