What's it like these days? 20 years ago (has it really been that long) there was one club for me to play at - Woolston. There seems more clubs around now but what's the state of play? How about schools rugby? What is the clubs interaction like with the primary and high schools in the town?

I like going to watch Crosfields with my lad, have a few beers and watch some entertaining rugby.
It can be a decent standard if a little lacking of discipline at times.

Could someone list the amateur clubs & their relative league positions?
Any recommendations ?
It is easy enough to find fixtures via the internet ?
Previously I used to watch amateur RU Saturday afternoon at my previous place of residence ( the only "rugby" available )

It's been a while, what happened to Grappenhall and Laportes?

Laportes went a long time ago didnt they? Not sure on Grapenhall though.

Just read that Grappenhall Giants now come under Latchford Albion.

I've been away over a decade.

Telford is another

I found a Guardian quote back in 1995 saying there were only 10 primary schools playing RL. How on earth we allowed that to happen god only knows. I don't know the exact number now, but there are 35 primary schools entered into the towns 7's competition this year. Add to that a big push by Wire to re-connect with the towns local clubs and schools and I think we should see a significant increase at amateur level over the next few years.

The clubs that I would list as 'Warry' area are;

Golborne

Would we include Clock Face ?

No not Clock Face, would be interested to know how many players all these clubs have on their books.

I know Crosfields have loads, think Latchford do too which is great. Rylands have always been big too.

Burtonwood Bulldogs have over 150 kids registered form pups 4-6 yrs upto u18's.
Not sure on the Burtonwood Bridge but they have a first team at least so must have say 20-30 players. Not bad for a small village, nearly 200 people playing rugby league on a weekly basis.

Rylands now has two teams operating at open age, 2nd div and 4th div. They have an U18, U16, U15, U14, U13. They then have teams all the way from ages 12-7 with ages 9, 8 and 7 having 3 teams each. There are then various 5 and under teams.

When you consider that following the devastation of the clubhouse burning down in 2002 the club was down to only 4 Junior teams it is a credit to the people involved who have helped to build this great club back up once again.

On a side note there will be a 20 year anniversary re-union in the next couple of months for the side who won the inaugural National Conference League Premier Division in 1994, the first of three successive titles.

This is this weekends fixtures for the under 18's down. So many different clubs now having so many different teams which is great for the sport and for the town.

When I was in Sycamore Lane Primary School we went on a trip to Wilderspool when I was about 9, but that was the only rugby related activity I can recall. Can probably count on one hand the number of times we played it at Sankey High.

A colleague's son is 13 and involved in the Wire youth set up, he doesn't have much good to say about how it is organised unfortunately.
