...the Great Bev played his last game for Warrington. I never saw him play a competitive game, but he was surely Warrington's greatest ever player.

Seen clips of bev at various events, sorry not around too see him play, from what i have been told a brilliant player.

He was one of those special players, whenever he got the ball the whole crowd, home and away, stood to see what BB would do. I can only dimly remember my dad taking me to Wilderspool when Bev was still playing, but can remember the excitement.

I am reading the Robert Gate book - The Great Bev - at the minute, he was my father's all time hero. My father sadly passed away on 13th April 2012, I found the book when going through his drawers and cupboards last week. Unfortunately, my fathers memories of Bev are no longer available but he could talk for hours about the great man.

I saw him play once in a testimonial at Wilderspool in the 70s (Alex Murphy ???) and got to sit with him in the changing rooms afterwards. I must find the match programme that he signed for me

Just completed decorating sons bedroom whilst he's at uni -and came across old programmes -one being Brian Glovers all star game - Smack bang centre pages - The great Bev's autograph - Forgot that I had it -been lost for years in the attic -needless to say lost it again to son Bill - I don't need it at 56 the name goes on . To be mounted and sheltered from sun -just need glossy photograph on the greatest now -

Was this before or after Warrington last won the league championship?

I would go so far as to say that not only was Bev the best ever Warrington player, his try scoring records make him a strong candidate to be the best player in either code of all time.

I think Ms Bunnion doesn't realise that supporters can enjoy watching their team without winning silverware every year.Wigan,however Mighty ,have never had Brian Bevan in there ranks !!

Bev used to cut my Grandad's hair. First time he went to his shop he said he had thought of loads of questions to ask him about the club and his try scoring ability but they ended up talking about their time in the Navy (Aus Navy in Bev's case). Bev apparently wasn't that keen to talk about himself, shy man and thorough gent as well as a legend of the game. Robert Gate's book is excellent for anyone who hasn't read it.

The answer to Banyon is it was before we last won the league championship because we last won it in 2011.

I wish there was more video footage of Bevan, at least you can see clips of Bradman playing cricket, Bevan is a great enigma to all but the oldest of us. I know the game was different then but to dominate the try scoring charts by such a margin and for as long as he did, in a team that was good but wasn't dominating year after year by any means, suggests he obviously had something totally different than his peers. I imagine him as an Offiah type player with out and out pace and the ability to swerve and step without dropping his pace, must have been a heck of an exciting sight for fans at Wilderspool.

I'm lucky enough to have seen Brian Bevan play. I saw him score the winning try for Wire v Saints in the Lancashire Cup Final at Central Park (around 1960)

He was a great try scoring winger, BUT the greatest player? I wouldn't say so. That accolade would fall to Murphy and Boston as they could play in different positions and still be match winners. Boston played in major finals at wing, centre and stand off.
Murphy played at Wembley at stand off and centre (and may have played at scrum half for Leigh and or Wire)

Back to Bevan, Billy B rates him as the best winger he played against, followed by Tom Van Vollehoven.

Is Rogues not entitled to his opinion? He has after all seen all three players play which is more than most of us.

I haven't seen Bevan play, but I have seen Offiah who was my Bevan, he was a genius and the most exciting player I have seen, but my opinion is the greatest is Ellery Hanley never mind how many tries Offiah scored.

Hanley is better than Offiah because he was a great player not because Offiah couldnt/never played wing fullback or centre and thats Rogues' argument (or rather excuse to not rate Bevan as the greatest).

incidently Rogues I believe Boston said Bevan was "the greatest he played against" he didnt stipulate the specific position just simply the Greatest.

I'll sit back and wait ten years and if Sam tomkins plays all his career at full back I can discount him as a great because other great players will have played a variety of positions....? just like Billy Slaters' not as good as Lockyer because lockyer played fullback and stand off????

It's another very badly disguised chance to have a pop at Warrington whilst bigging up Wigan. It's both boring and tedious.

It was a totally unbiased view of three great players (Bevan, Boston and Murphy) In fairness I should probably have added Neil Fox.

IMO Boston, Murphy and Fox were better all round players than Bevan, but that's not deriding Bevan who was a great winger.

What I find amazing is those who are having a pop, who never saw any of those fantastic players in real action.

AS I said previously I saw Bevan play in that Lancashire Cup Final v Saints at Central Park and Saints switched Vollenhoven to the left wing to mark him.
For those who actually went did Saints play in Black jersey with a White Vee that day? It was well over 50 years ago.

To be fair they're having a pop at you and your tiresome, passive aggressive persona on this board, not the players. If you acted your not inconsiderable age a bit more you'd get cut some slack. As it is, you're just seen as an Odemwingie with a bag of werthers originals and a cheeky smile.
