honestly this is the best squad ive seenw warrington have ever (me only being 16) i think every player in this squad would play first team starting rugby for most other clubs, we could split this team down the middle and both would be play off teams at least. i think this year for the first time we wont be worried about injuries (too much) because of the people we have left waiting in the wings, aswell players like ben evans and laithwaite etc will come through who i have big hopes for. any thoughts?

| It is very good but age within the core positions is a concern for me. These days with sports science and general conditioning the way it is it's not AS important, but next year I think we'll be going through some changes.

briers retires and we have myler ratchford and obrien which will cause competiton for places so they will have to perform each week,
morley retiring will obviously hit us hard but i think we will recruit someone aswell as having players like cooper, ben evans etc young good players
riley, burke or that kid we signed from bradford who's name escapes me can take the full back role which gives more competition for places riley has already proved he is up to standard
im not as worried

| We have this thread every off season I think every year of Cullen's reign we heard that next year was our year for trophies.
Obviously now we have a top side and should be optimistic but I am a bit wary of next season tbh.
As Wirefan says it's an ageing side in key positions, and some players will start to decline, but we might just get through this year. As of last year guys like Morley, Briers, Hodgson, King and both Monaghans were either the best in their position or as good as anyone in their position in the league but the first three are approaching the end of their careers and King has gone so will we still have six top players like that? Possibly getting Trent Waterhouse in we might now have the best backrower in the league, we will see.
I still would tip us to finish top as I don't think Wigan or Saints or Leeds have clearly strengthened but I am not taking anything for granted about next year. Sometimes you see sides like Chelsea or AC Milan a few years ago, that everyone think is ageing, and they hang on and win the title....the downside is they keep those same players together for a couple more years and then they really are ageing.
Also time will tell on what's happening to Myler, if he is not here next year then hopefully we can get by with Ratchford or O'Brien there, but it will weaken us if we have to go back to Michael Monaghan at 7 instead of hooker.

| We certainly have strength in depth but we won't know for a while if we have quality in depth, Rhys Evans made a good debut for us but he went a bit quiet after that, thats understandable given he's just starting out his career at SL level, its a big step up from the rugby he's been playing in the under 20's.
We won't know for a couple of seasons how good the likes of Gareth O'Brien, Rhys Evans, Ben Evans and Chris Hill will turn out to be. The potential is certainly there, its a big step up from potential to being the real deal though.
Matt King will be a huge loss both in height, strength, defence and bringing the ball out. He scored some impossible looking tries that only the likes of him would score due to his shear size, height as well as agility.
Like a few others have pointed out we have a few ageing players in key positions that won't be as nimble and as effective as time goes by, Lee Briers is like a fine wine at the min, he just gets better with age so thats a big plus.
Quietly optimistic but cautious as well.

| Warrington need to plan ahead more. Less flat track bullying and more focus on the business end of the season. Giving the younger players more game time is the way to do that. Keep the key players as fresh as daisies and if you lose a few seemingly winnable games, who cares.

Other teams need to raise their games rather than for Warrington to lower ours.

Very difficult question to answer. On the face of it; Saints, purely down to the drive that Graham gave them. A similar argument could be had with ourselves and the work that King did that went unnoticed, especially at exit sets. Where we are different from Saints, is we are fortunate that we are reasonably strong in the threequarters and in Evans, we have a potential wunder kind. Wigan, theoretically, should be the best placed to cover their losses as the backrow is their greatest player density, even though both Hoffman and Tomkins where their first choice.

Hoffman & Hansen were first choice when available, so Hock should be able to cover Hoffmans loss, Farrell will probably again claim the bench spot. The centre position my main concern at Wigan, although we could conceivably move Charnley there and put Roberts back on the wing if we have finally sorted out his knee problem. A fit Fielden is more than an adequate replacement for Coley.

Hock will cover Hoffman's absence in respect of a body, but work ethic; not remotely close. I do take your point about Hansen in the back row.
Charnley to centre is an obvious one, but I wouldn't hold your breath regarding Roberts. He appears to be in the playing wilderness, for whatever reason. I could see Goulding getting a start, comfortably, in front of Roberts.

| Centre is a huge headache for us but as getdownmonkeyman said, we've got second rowers coming out of our ears. I'd rather Charnley stay on the wing but I think he could well move into the centres with Goulding on the wing.

Charnley at centre defensively would be a big risk, he's got a big target on his head at the minute and he had the relative safety of being on the wing, his positional play is diabolical.
When we played Wigan this year the obvious play was to target Joel & Charnley.

Most sides would attack down that side anyway as Carmont and Richards are the best wing/centre partnership in Super League for me.
I think Goulding would be a bigger risk than Charnley. I hope the lad proves me wrong, but I don't think Goulding will ever make it at Wigan. Joel Tomkins was in the centres as a last resort. Tomkins' defensive positioning was dire although he went some way to compensating for it when we had the ball in hand. I'm really disappointed we haven't sorted the centre problem out for 2012.

wasn't first choice backrow pairing Ryan H and Joel T prior to marting G's "problems" ?

I'm pretty sure Tomkins played 99% of his games at centre last season. As you say, if Gleeson would have been around, Tomkins would have had a starting berth in the backrow.

For the first five games when both Tomkins and Hansen were available for the second row spot Tomkins was on the bench four times and Hansen once.
It'll be interesting too see how Gelling goes in the centre this coming season.

He'll stay on the wing and look to beat his 2011 tally of 27 tries in 32 starts.
And only 20 years old
