| Just about to post this myself, very strange he was offered one at all in my eyes.
I havent seen anything to suggest he will add anything, although i said the same about Blythe and he has improved as the season went on.

| another youngster that was massively hyped, not done a single thing. But as mentioned above, blythe has really upped his game, maybe this could happen with Tyke.
I am aware that personal reasons have had an affect previously, maybe if these distractions (and it's not really him from my understanding but things around him) stop he will come good? I hope he does.
Good luck for the next two years i guess!

Just out of interest exactly how much cap space is being used? Was it a waste when he played in the Challenge Cup win?
I seem to recall a 12 page thread slagging the club off on this very board only a couple of years or so ago when it was being "rumoured" that McCarthy wasn't getting a new deal.

| Since then he's had a chance and tell me what he's done with it, tell me a single game in which you thought he looked half decent or took the fight to the opposition, a club needs squad players, i understand that, but he brings nothing to the table.
Like the op says 1 year as a last 'lets see what you can do' but 2 years?
Or because he's come through our youth he's beyond criticism?
Look at Cooper, Riley, Blythe and Evans they've come on and really took their chances and then i look at Tyke, Mitchell and Williams and think good god what am i not seeing that thr training staff do. Dire, if he proves me wrong, great, but don't hold your breath.

I guess the two year deal reflects the length of the Masters Degree he is doing at our Education Partners of Chester Univeristy.
Which of our Academy back-rowers would you put infront of McCarthy - judged on performances rather than hearsay?

| I confess to not watching the youth squads so if not going on hearsay then that's difficult but the fact of the matter is Tyke is a tried and failed player and faith should be shown to someone else.
We have a healthy squad of forwards and players like B.Evans should be given a chance now.

| Tried and tested?? at the most he's had 10 or 11 appearance,of the bench. How many would you say we should give them before they are discarded as a waste of space... Matt King and a few others took most of their first season to settle in?? When the team has played as well as they have over the last 2 season its difficult to get a chance, with Westwood, Anderson etc being in the form of their lifes...
Personally, I am biased as I have watched the tounger teams with interest since a couple from my school have got signed up... but I'll reserve Judgement on the likes of Tyke, when he has had as much game time as the Mitchel, Coops, Blythy etc then maybe he can show what he can do..

| 3 subs appearance last season...for Warrington 1st team.
I'm assuming then you've watched all his 17 of his appearance, spread across Warrington Leigh and Wakefield for you to make your judgements. If so I bow to your superior knowledge. Personally I prefer to go with Mr Smiths instincts mate..

| He's evidently been given the Jon Clarke contract, with the clause stipulating "must take the bulk of the blame for any disappointing Warrington performance, whether physically involved or not, for the next two years".

Yed, about 5 years ago I can remember people saying Super Ben was a waste of money and we should send him back to Wakey. I can also remember games in the 2005 season when some elements of the South were really giving Super Ben Gip. TS has brought out the very best in Benny and I am sure that TS will do the same with Tyrone.

| One thing is for certain - Tyke wouldn't just be given a contract to use up 'free cap space' as has been suggested; he has been given a 2 year deal because he has earned it despite what some on here seem to think.
We are fortunate nowadays as a club to be more choosy about who are given contracts, so the fact that Tyke has been given a TWO year deal is testament to what the excellent coaching staff think about him.

| I think a lot of people are being very harsh here. Last year at Wakey a lot of their fans were saying he's got a lot of potential and looks good. He needs a run of games in the team but with so many backrowers in front of him he's going to find it hard getting a chance at Wire.
I'd like to see him go out on loan to someone, get some valuable SL experience if possible, I think personally he brings a lot more to the table than Mitch does. How many of the best backrowers in SL are only 23 years of age?
In Smith We Trust.

You can't give Smith credit for getting the best out of Westwood. Cullen reinvented Westwood, he was a quality backrower long before Smith got the job.
As for McCarthy, it's all a bit knee jerk, we're all guilty of it you're either brilliant or crap. I think he's just middle of the road, finding his feet still and the club will hope that in the next two years he realises his potential which has been there to see from an early age.
He's had his injury problems and barring the odd run of a couple of games like 2009 when Smith left out Rauhihi in the final to play McCarthy lets not forget, he's never really had the run of games to make a spot his own.
He made a break this year against Wakefield and he looked quick - I think he tried to score himself when he had support but I did stand there and think 'we haven't got that', someone who can go through the line and score from 50m out with genuine pace, like Wilkin seems to do, Gilmour used to, Joel Tomkins etc. I hope he becomes that mobile backrower that I think we could do with to be honest for certain games.
