Considering Smith's contract is up Nov 2011 when would you think we should look at offering an extension? I would have through a 12 month extension to Nov 2012 has merit now?

I just wonder whether he would stay that long. He strikes me as a sort of "challenge led" guy and may fancy something new. However we could convince him to "do a Ferguson" and not leave until he has made us the most successful league winning club in history (which will happen when MUFC eclipse LFC's record this season by the way).

Like you say, maybe 2012 would be the one.

Be good for the club to do this now, you don't want that uncertainty going into next year.

I think he will remain here for a good while yet. Whilst I agree that the challenge is probably his greatest driver, creating a long-lasting competitive squad is a close second. For wont of a better way of putting it; a Broncos type dynasty undertaken by Bennett.

Smith for me has been our best coach since i've followed wire (198icon_cool.gif. We should pull all the stops out to retain his services and hope he can
do a Ferguson as mentioned already in this thread.

When TS was appointed I thought we would get 3 years out of him then he'd move on, I assumed he was CV building before reaching his ultimate destiny of coaching an NRL club. However I'm sure I read an interview last year where he was suggesting his family was settled and he saw his future in the UK. Certainly it would seem odd to take British citizenship if he was planning on "going home" long term. If thats how he feels then I can see him being our long term coach. He's already been Leeds and GB coach so it's not like there would be any other alternative challenges for him, if he leaves us he will just be looking for another SL club. We could be his long term project like Arsenal are for Wenger, because our board are obviously a bit in awe of him and he will be able to have total control which wasn't the case with Hetherington at Leeds.

Its easy to get ahead of ourselves though, things could soon turn sour. A couple of trophyless seasons and the fans will get restless and ask if we have gone stale under Smith.

That may be a little extravagant, however I would like to live in a world where Smith's contract expires after Jon Clarke's (which it currently does not).

Go for a 12 month extension until the end of 2012. I reckon that will be enough time to put the GF trophy and the WCC trophy on the HJ sideboard!
