| There is a drinking culture in society. Every club in every sport in the western world has a drinking culture. The majority of professional sportsmen are males aged between 18 and 36; how do we expect them to socialise with each other? A game of crown green bowls and afternoon tea round at Lee's house?
Brett Stewart, of Manly, the World Club Champions, has been accused of nastiness with a 17 year old girl - in a bar! They are the best team in the world and they have a drinking culture.
Andy Gregory was hardly teetotal, nor could he be singled out as someone not living upto his reputation.
It is only a problem when teams are losing.

| The drinking culture thing is nothing shocking and nothing new.
I do believe that our 'drinking culture' is probably more serious than a lot of others, but let's be honest about things here, it's probably not nearly as bad as it was in the semi professional days!
In fact, I seem to recall Eddie Hemmings asking Paul Cullen on the SL show about the drinking culture when he first came back from Whitehaven, Cullen's response was something like: "If you think the club's got a drinking problem now, you should've seen what it was like when *I* was a player!"

Yep, I was talking with my dad about this earlier and some of the players that we had on that 'legendary' team of the late 80's.
This topic also came up in a fans forum at Burtonwood Catholic Club a few years back, with Cullen and Rob Parker on the panel, and Parker stated that it is no worse than any other club, and Bradford was much worse in fact. They were winning at the time though and got no stick for it.
When you look at the trouble players from Leeds and Bradford have been in, and from many NRL players, you can see that people focus on the Warrington issue due to the fact we are under-performing, when I would put the majority of it down to rugby issues.

| Yep ... I can understand the point coming up when, like in seasons past, we'd play well for 50/60 minutes and then completely fall apart, essentially looking completely unfit. I think everyone knows what excessive drinking does to your fitness levels even if you do regularly train.
I don't however understand why this is coming up now, our issues right now are not a fitness issue (unless the being hammered from the 1st minute is down to the players being totally knackered just from the pre-match warmup ?!?!?!)

| It's been mentioned on the SL show, on sky & by at least 2 bbc radio stations this weekend.
It only becomes a problem when it affects their ability to do their job. No one will say that it has (on here) without being able to back it up with a bit of evidence.
Until then, wether true or not, we're just reading between the lines.

| I have no problem whatsoever with a player that likes a drink as long as he`s the model professional in his job, Bob Jackson couldn`t half put the beers away most nights but he was one of our most consistent past performers that always gave 101% + some more as well. I know the game is more professional these days but their is no harm in a player having a beer or two to relax as long as he keeps a professional attitude whilst he is employed as a professional RL player both away from and at the club.

| It tickles me that people (including our own supporters) think it is unique to us.
Ask Saints fans about Long's antics. Ask Wigan fans about Hock. Unfortunately, in a droup of people the law of averages will dictate there will be a few dimwits.

It's a metaphor for "lack of professionalism and dedication".
I would love to know if the players were allowed a mickeyup on the bus home. About 5 years ago under PC the players were allowed to drink heavily on the bus back from London, as Mr Briers will be able to testify to.

| I think we are missing the point on this so called "drinking culture".
It doesn't matter who drank what in the 70's and 80's and if they drank more back then than the players do now.
The fact is Warrington Wolves do not compete with teams of the 80's.
Sports as a whole has changed a great deal in recent years.
Only last year I watched a documentary about South American football, and how players like Diego Maradona would not have made it as a professional in this day and age due to his size and build.
One of the greatest players of all time wouldn't be selected by scouts in this day and age because fitness, hight and build is more important now than skill and ability.
I sent a post about 2 years ago on thsi site regarding the drinking culture in rugny league and compared it to that of football.
My belief back then was that Rugby League would end up going the same way as football with players becoming more aware of their fitness and looking after their bodies more.
I'm not saying that the players drinking habits are the cause of this current run of form, but I have said in the past and I still stand by it, that if Warringtons coach could improve the lifestyles and fitness of the players, we will see that extra 10% we have been missing season after season.

| As far as 'drinking culture' goes, Fergie had the same problem at United when players such as Robson, Whiteside and McGrath were in the team.
Indeed the solution he had to this problem was to release McGrath even though he was still one of the best defenders in the country, to try and put an end to it.
