I don’t doubt the pack was bigger, but their halves were a Warrington player who failed to perform and a Hudds player who blew hot and cold and wasn’t wanted by Ian Watson, whereas we had the England half-back pairing. Their outside backs (Newman excepted) consisted of the likes of Myler and Briscoe, whereas we keep hearing from other clubs’ fans how it was crazy for us to get rid of our backline stars like Charnley and King. As I say, on paper we were up there with the top teams. There must be something more within our culture that seems to inhibit solid, professional consistency in our performances. Let’s hope it’s fixed going forward.

We only beat Leeds on rd1, when they were struggling, because they played much of the game with 12 and at a time, 11 men.

Agreed, I can't see how it wasn't given when a yellow card was issued. Saints were the more deserving team over 80 minutes but if that was given it could have been different.

A good advert for rugby league though and I've enjoyed channel 4s coverage again.

Penalty try rules aren't what they used to be. They have to be certain the player would have scored. Can you ever be certain when the ball is bouncing towards the dead ball line like that? Even if you say he would definitely have got there, you can't say he would have grounded it without knocking on. It's just never given these days. The only way it could be is if the ball settled to a stop on the floor in the field of play. If you think that's a penalty try, show me one that has been given in the last 5 years. It was definitely the right call.

Now whether the rule should be changed to benefit the attacker in that situation rather than the cynicism of the defender is another matter entirely, but in the current rules you're never getting that as a penalty try.

I think the rules should be changed then, I'd definitely go benefit of the doubt to the fouled player. The rules at the minute encourage those sort of offences rather than deter them, surely?

Let's think of it this way, if that offence was the other way around today and saints then lost, redvee would be in total meltdown and would likely crash for at least a week.

It would be anyway, no matter how we lose. I think there's a good chance of that next week too, depending on how much damage the disciplinary committee do to an already decimated team. We were awful today by our standards.

3,5,7,8,21,24,25 out injured, 2,4,6,11,16 playing injured/ just returning from injury (since May in the case of 4). There are injuries in the post-25 but don’t want to be accused of number pumping. This was probably our strongest team since good Friday.

I never thought for a moment that a penalty try would have been awarded, they're as rare as hen's teeth these days. Today's rules have just about made them extinct.

Well, Mr Makinson seemed fairly convinced he was going to score hence the blatant cheating. If it helps you to reconcile it by calling it professionalism then do so but it was cheating. 10 mins in the bin with 5 mins left is hardly a punishment.

Still, lets hope the karma gods have made a note ready for next week.
