but the difference between Long and Mellor is after a handful of games for widnes all of superleague were interesed in signing Long...... Mellor is 27 and played about 160 games for widnes and I'm not sure the top clubs have been knocking on the door at Halton Stadium.....generally that's a bit of a gauge to where his level is......

Mellor wants to play for Wire. Warrington can match Toronto and Catalans within the new cap anyways. I do think Toronto will have a massive cull though. Their team looks like it would give Widnes a game on paper...
I've a feeling there are going to be some surprise strugglers next year.

Wasn't there a falling out between the club & parents a few years ago over the coaching methods being used for the junior players ,which led to some up & coming youngsters moving to other clubs ? I believe Joe Mellor was one of those involved.

It's not important that Wigan got rid or that Widnes are a struggling team. Would he be a decent signing? He has caused lots of problems to us in the past and he looks pretty good to me.

And is one of the better half backs available at the moment... if we go for another marquee NRL half (which I hope we do) we could do worse than Mellor alongside him. The options aren’t exactly abundant at the moment. I wasn’t a massive Kevin Brown fan before he this season but what I’d give to have a younger Brown here for the next two years... and I never thought I’d sa that in 2017.

What about Luke Gale then...what about Kevin Penny too? The top clubs didn't knock on his door so you could have said Swinton was a gauge of where he was, till he came back to be a successful SL winger with us.

He's the sort of player we should be going for.

Had Roberts been a class act for us, and "done his job" ala Hiku, then left back to Aus "homesick" or whatever, I'm sure he would no doubt go back to NRL with our blessing.

As he's not set the world alight, our view is a little different now he wants out.

But that's a risk with any signing - old or young, from here or overseas.

He's not lived up to expectations, but that shouldn't put us off going for similar again. We should be setting our sights on exactly that sort of player.

Possibly someone younger, who doesn't have the family/kids who need to settle. Leeds' signing of Matt Parcell comes to mind.

Start scouting for kiwi half-backs.

Kiwis are generally tougher, much better value for money, don't turn up at Manchester airport with a surf board under one arm asking which is the best beach in Warrington and don't throw Maria Carey style diva tantrums if it rains.
