| Quote ="Wirefan"I like Gatcliffe. I even like his cheesy "sexy" stadium comments he makes. I think it's great that we have someone like him at the club wanting to push us forward.
Going back to attendances and fan attraction; one thing that does suprise me is how poor our club has become at game-day entertainment in general. The in-game product itself we have spot on through the excellent team we are lucky enough to have, but pre-match, and half times entertainments are now very poor offerings for me.
I have nothing against the community dancers - they do a great job, but we are a far cry from the Peter Deakin days of the Starlights and the sort of match day package he brought to the club.
People may turn up their nose at cheesy matchday entertainment, but there's no doubt it brings people through the doors.
In my opinion, we need to bring that family package back to Warrington. Make it a day out rather than just a game of rugby.
The club could also embrace social media much more to it's advantage, with better fan interaction. Why can I not vote for my man of the match at a game for example? There's lots that can be done at the club to improve the offering on a Sunday afternoon.'"
The sumo challenge would put at least 3k on the gate.

That is something we are way behind on. Most clubs these days provide fans with an instant response, where as it is rare for Warrington to reply to people, which is annoying as every little thing said on the internet in relation to the club (including these boards) gets read. It is the little things that make the big things happen!

| Quote ="sally cinnamon"Ticket schemes are not going to get you 20,000 fans unless its Wigan and we can get them to bring loads over (maybe offer them half price if they leave before the end). '"
I didn't say they would. But it might help as part of a wider, community focussed marketing push. What about a loyalty card type approach like the supermarkets do? Points for buying stuff from the shop, points for buying a season ticket, points for buying match tickets, points for introducing new fans etc. But as PART of a wider scheme, it wouldn't work on its own.
Quote ="sally cinnamon"I wouldn't try to diminish the work the club does engaging with the community but I think you get diminishing returns with this in terms of being able to attract more fans. If a big programme of investment in the community would have 20,000 through the turnstiles then money wouldn't be a problem, we could borrow it if a lender truly believed it would pay off like that. '"
Thats a very defeatist way of looking at it. Thats like saying there can't possibly be any new business ideas out there because if there were they would have already happened. Look at Leeds and Wigan - they are both extremely visible in the local communities with a huge number of amateur, junior and school teams playing RL compared to Warrington. That is a large part of why they get bigger crowds. And its why football clubs in smaller towns get bigger crowds - because it means more to more people. Lots of people in Warrington know nothing about RL and rarely come into contact with it.
Quote ="sally cinnamon"It is likely to be a much harder product to sell to new fans than we have had under Smith with his array of top class stars from both hemispheres. The likelihood is we will slip backwards as a club on the field, in the next 5 years. Whilst people may point out that other SL clubs will be in the same boat too, that is the whole problem, the game in general will find it difficult to grow. '"
But, as others have said above, selling RL to your community isn't about top class stars. Youngsters will look up to professional sportsmen regardless of how famous they are. Obviously the higher profile of football will always be a draw - but lots of football fans don't actually attend matches as its too expensive. There is no reason why they can't follow football on TV and attend live RL matches as well. If you embed RL in your communities through school teams and local clubs, people will want to support their town team too providing the club has good relations with them.
I know none of the above is easy, the point I'm really making is that I do believe Warrington has the potential to be a much bigger club as there are loads of under-tapped areas nearby (Lymm is a classic example). But it will only be achieved by a joined up, long term strategic plan, not just by telling your existing fans that we must sell out our matches.

| Was in earlier to pick up two tickets for the south stand and maybe the away shirt while they're on sale.
Was told I needed to provide information i.e. name, address etc - asked if I could have the tickets without providing this information, was told no. Left without the tickets.
Guess they're not that bothered.

| A half time game, we are sponsored by HJ, win a car.
Make it something difficult/rare but do-able, place the ball on the half way and you have to hit the crossbar from a place kick.
Each player has his own number, have a text voting system for man of the match, the club can even make a little money off that.
Anyway they can get the road closed at the side of south stand on match days? Have something going for the fans like at Magic weekend?

The highlight of Good Friday was two blokes trying to grubber kick a ball into a convertible Bentley, though such frivolities are limited to the iPitch!

Ganson's, despite the result and team performance the Bentley kicking competition was only just/hardly a highlight we can do better surely and I don't mean the quality of the car you are kicking at.

I don't doubt that happened, but surely there is some misunderstanding there. Is it because they don't want Wigan fans to buy tickets for the South Stand? I bought tickets for Widnes away from Widnes cos I wanted to sit along the side. They asked for name and e-mail but not full address. Why wouldn't you give your address anyway? You can still opt out of being on a mailing list? I can't believe they would deliberately refuse to sell you tickets though.

May be the are "that bothered" and want to build up a data base of fans that aren't season ticket holders for this new fantastic marketing strategy that's going to fill our expanded stadium.
BTW why the big secret? You're not wanted by Interpol are you?

| It's not as if they're a business you don't have a brand loyalty to, i buy tickets and other stuff via the net so they have my details, i've only ever received (other than the stuff i purchased) one thing through the post.
I get around 3 maybe 4 emails a week MAXIMUM if that.
It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, i know it's your prerogative but seriously what harm do you think it can do?

I must agree, though I wish you could fill it many more times than I think you could, it does sound a bit like the sort of thing Dr Coolcash, AKA Ming The Merciless comes out with when he gets a rush of blood when a mic is shoved up his beard, but good luck, go for it!

| Yeah they took my details too, even though I buy a ticket every week. When they asked I thought it was a good idea tbh, although they shouldn't be turning people away who don't want to give details out, if that's what happened.

| Last post on this because to be honest, I'm not that d.
I'd just given my details to halfords and had to give info to another company yesterday - suppose I was just sick of doing it so I asked if i had to. In a 15 second conversation I was told I couldn't buy a ticket without providing the details in and the tone was take it or leave it.
I was 60/40 as to whether to go anyway (rushing back from work etc) so that little ultimatum made up my mind for me. No big deal, just from the clubs side no tickets or merchandise sold (or beer money on the night ), no customer information harvested and a dissatisfied potential customer.

Your examples of Leeds and Wigan are teams that win trophies and have top class players. There are lots of amateur, junior and school teams in Oldham, Leigh, Wakefield and Castleford too but they don't get big crowds.
I agree there could be new business ideas around and innovative ways of getting people to come in, but you are tinkering at the margins with those, you aren't going to get 20,000 through new community or marketing measures, unless the fans see something that they want to keep coming back to, top players, and a top team winning trophies.

It is about top class stars, or more to the point winning. Are you saying that those youngsters in Bradford that looked up to Henry Paul, Lesley Vainikolo saw Rikki Sheriffe and Marcus St Hilaire in the same way?
For how many years did we hear about how Bradford were the beacons of marketing and community engagement and how they had embraced the summer era but why did their fans desert them after 2005? Surely all of those efforts in the community, over 10 years or so should have established roots that meant the fans would still keep coming.
But something happened that turned the fans away. Bradford had cracked the family thing too, in the days of Bradford Northern it was all grim old men in flat caps, but during Bullmania there were loads of those teenage girls, what happened to them? Do they still come? Ten years on some of them will have kids by now and could have been bringing through new fans but are they still interested in rugby league?

| Quote ="SEB"The borough of Warrington is big enough, plus we already have fans from outside the borough in Cheshire. The market is available. Sadly, Warrington is very much a football town despite our top level sport being RL. The number of people involved in football is massively higher than in RL. Hence us having to sign lots of players from outside Warrington into our Academy.
Massive community engagement, coaching and marketing is required which means investment. Perhaps investment there before investing in the stadium will reap the rewards. Build it and they come has worked to a degree with the HJ originally but it doesn't seem to have done with the corners expansion. In fact it could have been counterproductive as less chance of selling out means less pressure to get a ticket meaning some fans may make late decisions not to bother attending.
So the club needs to get out into the community much, much more than it already does - but that means investment, money the club doesn't really have available, especially after the Sport England cuts.
Maybe the club could come up with some imaginative ticketing schemes that incentivise the fans to do the marketing for them - by encouraging us all to keep on bringing new / non-regular friends and family to the games.'"
The South Trafford areas have Warrintgon post codes. Salford, even though they claim that the connurbation of Manchester could be a potential fanbase and player pool in their licence bids, do absolutely nowt around Trafford or Manchester. I work in a Wythenshawe school and you could ask half our kids and they wouldn't know Salford CR existed. Around Altrincham and Wythenshawe there is a population of around 125000 people that have yet to be exposed to rugby league. Could we play on the Warrington post code thing around South Trafford and at into a working class area like Wythenshawe and get them exposed to rugby league?
Within Warrigton itself more investment could be put into a new and improved infrastructure of getting across the schools network and local/amateur clubs.
For a kick off, the RFL need to sort out Super League and bloody well stick with it when they do make it better age. T happens. That will help all attendances across the board.

| I've bought tickets in the shop plenty of times - including a South Stand ticket for Monday - and never been asked for details.
The only times I have were when I took the vouchers from her lad's season ticket in to buy a £5 ticket for a home game and a half price Magic Weekend ticket - both times for myself. I was asked to write name and address details on the back of the vouchers and on both occasions I just made them up.

I think you should feed that back to the club, it is clearly a breakdown in communication as no sensible business would wish to turn away customers.

| I bought tickets on Saturday morning and left very angry that i'd been hassled for all my personal details. I felt compelled to give them as I was paying with a card anyway but didn't like the approach for one minute. I'll be taking cash in future and not so forthcoming with information. Bad form wire the correct thing to do would be to ask politely for the information to be volunteered.
