| Quote ="BogBrushHead"If it's supposed to go to the man who's performed over and above what is expected, and best influenced his team's performances, I'd say Hill ..... and can't disagree that Finch, not Tomkins has made Wigan tick this year ......
But, it's a popularity contest, so it wont be Tomkins ...... good player (boy, did that hurt to type that!) but he even winds up his own team-mates ..... and the way he reacted when Hughes made a mess was disgraceful!
Basing it on my first thought above, I'd like to see a shortlist of Hill, Raleigh, Dureau, Burrows (just, from Delaney), Houghton, and, here's one that's been missed by most ..... Ben Cross ..... written off as 'past his sell-by', he's held (or at least given 100% trying) the Smellies together through a really difficult first season.'"
Dureau would be one of the contenders, and Hill a shoe-in for 'rookie of the year' if there was such an award.
I'm sure you're having a laugh with Raleigh, Delaney and Cross though. Any more average forwards you want to mention?
I don't care what the award is called, there's nothing steely about Rangi Chase. If the award is meant to honour the outstanding individual in the British game, then it's between Tomkins and Roby IMO.

'"
As I said, if it was for players who have performed above what is expected .... everyone sees those 3 as 'journeymen, yet on many occasions they have put in 80 minutes at near full tilt to stop their team-mates from being over-run, whilst the usual suspects being touted for MoS (the headline grabbers) all too often disappear from games until it's time to pop up with a walk-in try for the cameras. When Wigan have been under the cosh (against us twice, Leeds in Cup etc) Tomkins may as well have been Man of Custard for all the use he was. In the two games against Trinity, Raleigh was at times a one man defence ...... they almost held on at our place and it took over 50 minutes for a decent Wire team to take control at their dump, yet those performances get overlooked when it comes to the Twinkle Toes of the Year award.

If Wigan fans think he has been their most influential player then thats fair enough. I would imagine its really been Brett Finch.
similar to Wire fans who will Say they think its been Benny Westwood for us but in fact its probably been Brett Hodgson.
Man of Steel is a bit of an odd award. rename it player of the year then Tomkins can have it'"
I would agree with this fair and unbiased comment, all of it.

I agree but I would add Brett Hodgson and even Steve Menzies to that list and considering the age of the latter two especially SM their performances have been quite remarkable

| Tomkins main problems are his arrogance, the fact he plays the game with a scowl instead of a smile and the colour of the shirt he wears. In terms of ability he's a stand-out candidate but so are Westwood & Dureau but I think Tomkins will get it.
Roby always gets mentioned because he's so consistent - I don't think he's actually had that great a year, but has probably been eye catching in a very average saints team.

Been a few good shouts mentioned
Roby
Tomkins
Westwood
Dureau
Finch
One thing is for sure Chase won't be retaining it.

Biggest myth in rugby league. If you actually met Sam you'd see he's the most grounded, down to earth lad you could ever meet. Whats this "arrogance" everybody speaks of? What exactly does he do thats so "arrogant"?

| Great call for Sinfield.... He has carried Leeds when they really needed it, he's been immense when I've seen him play. As for Robyn, he plays 80 mins every week so his stats always look great but how many others teams only utilise 1 hooker?

Constantly in the refs ear when they have the audacity to penalise him/Wigan.
Tyring to prevent tries by diving in boots first
Gesturing to fans (yeah I know he gets stick but so do plenty of others)

| If Tomkins wins it, it shows he is respected amongst his peers so I'd doubt he's arrogant to them.
He does come across with a flash of arrogance at times IMO, he does my head in. But so did Sean Long too. Think it's probably down to a combination of their game breaking abilities and confidence/cockiness (delete as applicable) to be the best. I bet fans of the other teams see Briers in the same light.
I'm going for Roby, his workload alone puts him in with a shout but he's carried an average at times Saints pack single-handedly. He's a freak.

| James Roby for me. He's the best player. He ticks all the boxes for influence on the game, defence, driving force, metres made, setting up his team in areas of the pitch where they can do damage, organisation, passing ability, consistency, few mistakes.
He's my favourite non-Wire player.
Ben Westwood, Chris Hill, Rémi Casty, Kevin Sinfield, Sam Tomkins, Brett Finch... have all had good seasons too. But Roby has been the best.

I don't think he's arrogant. If he is it isn't a bad thing.
I just don't think he plays within the spirit of the game (he's not the only player). It seems like everything he does is to get a penalty. He winds me right up. If he's not swearing at the ref (never seen anyone swear at refs like he does...and get away with it!) he's hooking his arms or legs around a player or reaching over a player when he's been tackled making it hard for the tackler to get up but also to look like he's being held down.
He doesn't need to do it. He's a good enough player to play without the BS.

It's a novel celebration to the Leeds fans.

Most of what you say is more a reflection on the man’s personality than his actual ability as a player. There are many people in sport that show arrogance, bad sportsmanship that doesn’t mean they are not bloody good at what they do. I don’t think he will get to be MOS, but I also don’t think he is arrogant or a bad sportsman.

| I was listening to the Forty-Twenty podcast last week and Ryan McGoldrick was asked who he thought would get MOS. He said that sometimes if a player isn't particularly liked then nobody would vote for him and the players of the same team might agree not to vote for him. Shows a flaw in the process if that's actually happening because (as much as this pains me to say) Tomkins was the best player in the league last year and he should have won it but maybe he didn't because of his relationship with other players.
