I'd rather keep him, but Smith would not be a massive loss. He's decent, nothing more, and I don't buy the old line about "constantly playing behind a beaten pack". I can't remember ever coming away from a game marvelling at an outstanding flash of brilliance, his taking the game by the scruff of the neck or a moment when he singlehandedly won us the game. Blakeley, for one, used to do that on a regular basis and our pack was hardly known for pulling up trees during his lengthy spell at the club.
We've moved on from losing at least 5 better half backs in the last 7 or 8 years (Robinson, Myler, Ratchford, Clinch, Dunneman), and we'll no doubt lose 5 more...
If Smith were to go I can see the club having a fairly decent sum of money for replacements next season as along with Patten, Feka and Anderson you'd think 4 of the highest paid players are going. Think Sneyd is the ready made replacement and with his goal kicking ability it would take some of the pressure of Houldsworth. Invest in the forwards as all acknowledge we need and it would give someone like Sneyd the protection he'd need to work and progress into the star we know he can become.
All this does again show the foley of waiting until the final year of a players contract to renegotiate, we should have been trying to tie him down towards the end of last season by offering him a say 5 year deal, he's a player who would have warrented that without question.
At the beginning of the Season Smith looked the real deal.
Unfortunately since then his form has dropped off and he looks a run of the mill SH.
He does not score many tries, his kicking game has gone back to the dross we have seen the last couple of years and he does not create many openings.
If Saints or Wigan want him then good luck.
We have now replacements in the wings for Smith who want to play for the club.
Quote="Dantes Inferno"So you'd rather stay at Salford with a lower salary playing in front of an empty stadium with a cowardly pack, with nothing to play for each year with numpties running the show, i know where i'd rather be.'"
