The Auckland Nines is set to become a smashing success. 36,000 tickets have already been sold for each day at Eden Park, two months out from the tournament. A sell out of 44,000 each day is looking likely. This will be the biggest rugby league event ever held in the history of New Zealand. And in a country with one fifteenth the population of the United Kingdom, the event is outstripping the Magic Weekends of Super League in attendances.

Perhaps in its second year (2015) places could be made for Super League clubs. Not all of them. But what about the top four Super League clubs? That would give the Super League a great profile Down Under.

I'd invite the CC winners and SL GF winners in 2015.......Have to say this event has surprised me in it's momentum.......glad I got my tickets early and sorted out flights. They have priced it well (NZ$69 for2 days) and it has been all over TV with advertising and promotional events.

I think that having 4 SL clubs would create more of a Super League presence. It would bring the number of teams to 20. The argument that might be brought against the SL clubs being added is that the current 16 teams easily goes to a quarter finals of 8, semis of 4 and a final.

| I'm sure a few SL clubs would be interested in taking part: Wigan, Warrington, saints, Leeds and Hull FC (prob Salford too).
I'm sure I read that Wigan wanted to do it as part of their warm up to the WCC but it was too late to change the schedule for them. Also that they would be willing to accept SL clubs from 2015

That will be great if they are going to take SL clubs.
Should get a tremendous viewership if at least 4 SL clubs participate. But I think that the contest requires an even number of teams, so it would have to be 4 or 6 SL clubs. I would love to see Catalans there, with Morgan Escare and Eloi Pelissier running rings around the opposition.

| I am amazed I'm going to agree here. But for me nines is the way to reach a larger audience outside of RL. Quicker shorter games. Bit like 20/20 for cricket. And make earnings except from any salary cap. If the tournament can fund it then it will pay atheist going rate.

| Would have been great to have given the SL winners an invitational place to use as a warm-up to the WCC. The 9s schedule was sorted well before it was announced the WCC was going to be in Oz though unfortunately.

| Timing would have to change for it to appeal to SL clubs. They're not going to release their top players for a friendly tournament once the season has already started

There will be nothing "friendly" about the Auckland Nines.
Perhaps there will have to be adjustments of schedule to allow the tournament to be played just before the Super League season starts.

1. The organisers have made no bones about presenting this as an alternative to the Wellington 7's. Expect "sold out" signs erected but swathes of empty seats due to 38,000 of the 44,000 attendance being at the bar dressed as super friggin Mario brothers or the Von Trapp family!
2. Holidays here are 30 days + over Christmas. Imagine if you in France/America...(shall we call it Canada?) had your summer holidays and Xmas all at once! People leave work about the 20th of December and are not back until Feb......nobody will be interested in rushing back from the "bach" in mid January to watch Gareth Hock take someones head off.....

| No. The Magic weekend should be replaced by a 9's tournament over two days to take it out of the regular season and give us a different spectacle to watch.
Thoughts:
1) Regular randomly drawn knockout competition
2) Mini-league, one or two games per team (40mins per game) with highest points winer.
3) Rules to entourage fringe players to get a game
4) And why not, winner of the comp to play the antipodean winners at a later date. Who wouldn't mind a good game around the Christmas period for example? It's not like Boxing day is the same anymore.

I was going to ask why don't the poms just do their own version, with SL and Championship clubs in it somewhere in the UK (Wembley 9's or something) but I like this better.

| I doubt they do care, it's my main gripe with Australia, they have so much power to change this sport for the better and they simply couldn't give a fk, maintaining the status quo keeps them as the top team/league and I think that's how they want to keep it.

| Lets not forget though for many years, SL clubs could out price both RU and NRL.
But a lot of money has been wasted in both heartland and expansion clubs.

| could they maybe send over a superleague invitational side to take part rather than specific club sides? that way just one or two players from each club are involved. sevens and nines events often work like this with a mix of club, invitational, and national teams
i'm sure we can have fun trying to select such a side....
