Aprt from the positive PR, why oh why have they signed a 36 year old? Thomas is a sporting hero in Wales and may be very proud of his achievements but at 36 years old, am I right in thinking he's the joint oldest player in SL? He's left in 5 years too late to switch codes. Too much to learn and time definately not on his side!

Not at all, a bit of good PR is nice but clearly not at the expense of signing a marginal player at the very limit of his playing years unproven in the game no dought on a hefy two year contract at the expense of more able members of the squad. I would say a very marginal decision at best, what next, Gavin Henson? The water carrier could bring him on same lager every 20 mins or so to keep his alcohol levels up?

Are we talking about Gavin Henson here or your average rugby league player?

It's a tradition in our sport to knock any clubs why try something different to increase the numbers coming through the gate, or just to raise awareness of the club.

Whether Thomas creates the interest long term for rugby league in North Wales is to be seen, but it certainly created more column inches, minutes on TV and radio for the Crusaders than him not signing would have done...certainly wouldn't have got a mention on BBC's Six Nations coverage otherwise!

Youve gotta respect the guy for doing this, give him 6 months then we can decide.

The PR the club is getting from Gareth Thomas will give more players a chance in the future due to the increased profile of the club. Whilst he is not necessarily worthy just yet of a SL place on ability, the profile increase will help them years down the line.

Sport Wales last night did an article on Gareth Thomas ... again.

"The" Crusaders RL has already this season had more BBC Wales airtime than the CELTIC Crusaders had in their entire 4 year existence.

Even Jiffy has stopped slagging them off.

So therefore the signing of Thomas is of a benefit to the club and therefore a benefit to the sport.

But with a squad of fit players, should he have been on the bench last night? In what is a 17-a-side sport, the Crusaders practically forefeited a substitute.

There have been some pretty successful converts from Welsh Union to League in the past... some of them didn't even have a hundred Welsh caps or captain the Union British & Irish Lions

Well Steve Menzies at Bradford is 36 and he's still one of the fittest men in SL imo. I'm not expecting Thomas to tear up the league, but he's a good professional and I'm sure he'll be come good for crusaders

At least he didn't go in head first this week. Came on late in the game had a couple of runs, made 2/3 tackles maybe at fault for the Thompson try, he charged out a bit too quickly & Thompson side stepped him & went in the corner to score.

Once he settles in he'll be a very solid player for them. Defensively he'll be tough to beat and he'll be a strong runner.

His enthusiasm is good to see. He's seen it all in Union at far bigger and more meaningful events with bigger crowds, yet he really seems committed to making a go of his stay in league, no matter how short it is. Seeing him make it out as something worth doing can only benefit the sport. Players in Union who might think they would be better suited to league might be encouraged to follow him and kids who recognise him as a great sporting figure in Wales might watch league for the first time, again beneficial.

There are no drawbacks to this signing, applause to the team that pulled it off.
