I teach at a school in central Manchester. We have introduced RL as a new sport and the kids totally love it. To get as many rugby games as we can we entered a RU comp.

Now earlier in the week we taught our Yr9s about how sports are adapted to promote inclusion. They learned about Wheelchair basketball, Masters Football, the Paralympics and Blind/Amputee football.

After playing RU for the first time a kid asked me, and genuinely might I add, "was RU invented to include slower players? Maybe those who are a bit fat and cant run fast enough to play RL sir?"

I kid you not!

Case of point, my older brother who made a amateur rugby comeback
after 15 years went to the local union club because by his own admission
isnt fit enough to last 80 mins of league.

He went straight into their 2nd team and was one of their standout players,
...without knowing all of the rules

The point of this thread is not to compare Union and League - thats pointless and VERY dull. Its a funny comment made by a kid who has no prejudice of either game! End of!

To add to this i know someone who has played both codes,he says to me that in RL you have to be mighty fit and train your back side off,while in union you just turn up on game day and hope for the best, he reckons RU is so laid back it's not funny!

LOL reminds me of a time my lad was playing at HT at a Leigh home match.

League U8's on one side of the picth and Union U8's on the other.

The announcer introduced the teams, and said

" For those of you confused, Union is the game where they are playing Tag rugby, League is the one were they are doing the tackling"

My youngest played in an U8 tournament last weekend. Union Tag unfortunately, but its 5 tags and then a turnover.

I sometimes don't mind the occasional game of Union - I enjoyed the Lions tours and the Tri-Nations can be good. The Super 14 used to be better. But club level Rugby Union is awful. Truly, truly awful.

Several years ago I was talked into going along to a National League 1 RU club (there was no RL club near me at the time). Without ANY training I was in their thirds and then seconds, at full-back, then centre, and then within 4 games thrown in at fly-half (whatever they do). I'm certainly not the best oval ball handler in the world but the standard was shocking. They REALLY don't like big RL-style hits either.

I would sooner watch amateur Rugby League of any standard than some of the plodding kick, maul & jump-fests the Guinness Premiership and other RU comps serve up. It's terrible.

TBF picking your nose is more entertaining than Super League at the moment. It finished last month and doesn't start again until February
