Good on Phil Bentham for sending Stapleton of Salford off.

It's about time a lot more walked for this and for foul play as well.

How is this fair? it has absoultely nothing to do with the game itself. Refs should try to respect the players emotions

Well thats just great he goes and scores his second(?) try of the season, finally gets some points for my fantasy team and then goes and loses more than he gained. silly bugger.

I think you may be happier watching soccer where foul mouthed, petulant and childish behaviour seems to be the norm.

Glad someone posted this subject. It's getting out of hand recently, and I think there ought to be more refs sending players off for these offenses.

emotions need to be kept in check these are professional players there is NO excuse

if ref has ruined your game as fans its ok to abuse ref so why not as a player? after all even more at stake for them

Because the players are professionals, and should conduct themselves as such. They should also be setting a good example to any young fans watching.

The refs have respect as of right. That's why abusing them is against the rules.

Don't know why we are even discussing this. Showing disrespect to the officials is against both the spirit and the letter of the rugby league laws.

I was brought up to respect the match officials. I captained my side for quite a few years and I always called them sir (even the day we got a lady ref!). Any of my team that chatted back to the referree got more hassle from me and the other old heads than the ref. And I'm certain we got more respect from the refs because of it.
Sometimes you get tough decisions and sometimes you feel that you are being treated unfairly but that's just how it goes. A professional should get on with the game and get back in defense. Simple as that.

Anything less than full respect for the officials is more harmful to our game than another 100 years of rugby union.

I am sure someone will correct me, but was there not a famous incident years ago that went something like this:
Player: "Ref, what would you do if I called you a Barsteward"?
Ref: "I would send you off"
Player: "What would you do if I only thought you were a barsteward"?
Ref: Nothing, you would only be thinking it"
Player: OK, I think you're a Barsteward"

Surprised it's only a one match ban. It looks like the disciplinary committee have taken Mr Bentham's performance into account.
