| Quote ="cherrydevil"Its not a joke at all. He has been anonymous this year, as he has been for the last few years, and looks past it. He has no real pace, isnt too hot defensively either and just as often finds the crowd with his pass as he does his winger. He has had chance after chance and has never really performed internationally. It is time to move on.'"
His defence has been superb this year and he's played pretty well for England and GB over the years.
He was one of the only players to come away from the world cup with his head held high-ish.

| When Eastmond and Tomkins have the ball, you have a feeling something could happen.
When McGuire had the ball, we lost ground.

Senior also put his hand up for consideration, despite his earlier statements about retiring. I'd have had him straight off. Defensively, he remains one of the best centres in the competition, if not the best.
While I think a lot of quibbling over Smith's squad selection is the equivalent of arguing over which one-wheeled car you're going to drive, the fact is that centre is our worst position in this country, owing to the huge proportion of SL centres who are foreign. To leave out two of our few, and force yourself to consider playing a loose at centre even before injuries/form intervene, seems ill-advised and even reckless.

He had one half decent game. It was a game he shouldnt have even been picked in as he was absolutely shocking in the previous one and should have been dropped. It is hardly head held high stuff. He doesnt deserve to be picked based on form and ability, it is as simple as that.

If Senior was up for it he'd have been one of the first names on my sheet.
If he's still up for it then McGuire will get a training injury this week to be replaced by Senior with any luck! (not a real injury before anyone starts).

Shenton had a solid game but the Aussies did ask anywhere near the same questions of England'd left side defence that they did of the right.
Lee Smith struggled at centre for Leeds never mind defending against Inglis - he is not a centre and would not have played for Leeds in that position if the club had better options'"
True but it would not be true to say thay didnt ask any questions on the right hand side, ellis, shenton and hall made plenty of tackles, its just that the aussies couldnt break through so they would try the left again.

| T Briscoe at centre and Smith on the wing would have made more sense. Briscoe would certainly have put in a better defencive performance than Smith. Hope the lad realises he was not the problem out there.

| Interesting ain't it? Danny McGuire ain't up to it and yet 13 other Super League clubs still can't produce a player who can take his place in the England team.
Pryce isn't up to it, McGuire isn't up to it - if these players are so terrible then why can't some of Super League's more tin-pot clubs come up with players who are better?

Tomkins and Eastmond will do a much better job.

Tomkins in the first half was anonymous but of course, as he's flavour of the month at the minute around here, that's OK. There was an offload from Sinfield that would have had him over the line with barely a finger laid on him and yet, for whatever reason, he couldn't / wouldn't go for it.
As for Eastmond, he couldn't dislodge Sean Long as the St Helens No7.
The fact is that our player depth is not up to the job and for all the while that the Wakefield and Castleford fans come on here and slag off the Leeds contingent, it's there clubs who are equally culpable for today's performance for not producing players of a better standard.

Shenton thats what you get when you don't pick from top teams.
Eastmond is far more dangerous than McGuire and his defence is miles better, he will always do better at international level.
Eastmond will threaten the aussies far more in attack which is what we need.
Tomkins and Eastmond for me, by quite some distance.
McGuire and Smith were responsible for every aus try. How do leeds cover for defence like that week in week out?
Senior should be in the team.

I agree with you on that one. Putting a full-back up against Greg Inglis was a disaster waiting to happen.
The point still stands though. A full back, playing at centre for Leeds, has still gone on to have an outstanding season in Super League that has led to international honours. That is where the problem lies.

And what's wrong with Shenton? he would have walked into the Saints team (and Leeds team for that matter) last season because he's certainly better then Smith & Gilmour/Wheeler/whoever else Saints used as a makeshift centre.

| the blame isnt on one club`s players it is on sl as a whole, to many overseas players stopping the young players getting a place. get rid of them all, we have gone backwards in the last 10 years we need to go back to the british way of playing RL, bring back the biff and let the halfbacks run the game.

Agreed. I would keep Smith on the wing and Maguire as SO to have some experience in the backs. Next year neither of them will be in the side, but next match is a must-win, you can't afford to simply build for the future.

| I have never rated Mcguire hes fine in a dominant side running at will through poor defences, but today he was shown up for what he is, his defence is awful and his genral play against a top side offers nothing a great club player playing around a great team playing in a league where they very rarely get pushed to the max, so when the going gets tough they cannot cope, Smith again was another none performer, all the tries came from their side and obviously the Auz coaching staff knew this weekness and exploited it, how our staff cannot see it is beyond me....

Yeah, probably because every time they went down the right they were stopped, whereas every time they went down the left there was an open channel to the line...
Now Tony, if you were facing such a defence, where would you aim your attacks?
