| Quote ="Cibaman"When I first went to a Wembley cup final a large part of the appeal was that it was a rare trip to "the smoke". It was a big deal going to London then. Great excitement was had arranging the chara and the crates of beer, or posing in Trafalgar Square. That's all gone. Not reallly surprising that the fixture has lost some of its appeal.'"
For me, this is where RL doesn't exactly do itself any favours. I really, really don't like this "rugby league's big day out" thing - as if it is some sort of huge deal that us Northerner's have ventured to The Big City.
How do you sell RL as a forward thinking, progressive sport when you have this image of confused Northerners leaving their pit village for the one and only time each year?

Sadly that’s what the majority of the parochial M62 pit dinosaurs want. The thing is its so true. It is the one day a year that a large % of the north get to see the sun and pints priced at £5. Stop living in denial.

Is that greatly different to how the majority of the UK look upon the inbred toffs that populate Twickers car parks with land rovers on 6 Nations days.
All sports have pigeon holes to climb into, and all opponents of that sport will exagerate them.

| When they show the NFL Wembley game on the beeb the presenter (Jake Humphrey I believe) always bang on about 90K fans being there as to make out that it was so popular when in 2010 only 55700 turned up with a large portion of seats covered over in the lower tiers.
In any case no FA cup final has been an absolute sell out, the 2008 final was 89,874
People getting hang ups about a few empty club wembley seats is ridiculous, if you look at the 2009 & 2011 finals it seems the bandwagon fans of the finalists didn't attend or neutrals weren't interested as the attedances were 13.5K & 11.5K less than capacity

Perhaps so, but thats why thousands of neutrals would turn up every year. It was the event and the weekend as much as the final itself.

the attendance for that game was around 85,000.
the first few rows are always covered over for NFL games at Wembley because players and officials stood pitchside completely block the view from there.
look at any NFL stadium, there are never seats at pitch level, always a 6 foot perimeter wall

my bad, it was 83,941, in 2011 it was only just over 75K, however my point was all sports want to big themselves up with 'it's a sell out' when to the casua observer it isn't.

It's tickets sold which count as the attendance, not actually used.

| 'The Observer' gives the attendance yesterday as 79180, which doesn't seem too bad to me.

I told you they were included didn't I. This means our showpiece attracts about 62000 paying fans these days, well done RFL for ripping the sport apart.

| I'm not sure how the RFL are supposed to make people go to the match. Tickets are available cheaply months and months in advance, and there's plenty of deals out there too. What the RFL can't do is stop people making excuses as to why they haven't gone when moaning about the attendance. See also internationals.
(Not everyone can afford to go and some work weekends, not a problem with those people at all!)
