As others have stated there are plenty who can't stand Rabs, and you will be hard pressed to find an Aussie who likes the Channel 9 coverage.
When you watch every weekend for 20+ years people invariably will get bored of Hemmings and Stephenson, though much of the complaints are daft. Many people like myself have grown up knowing no different apart from sporadic games on the BBC. Like it or not they are the voice and face of rugby league in this country, which is why Sky rate them so highly. Likewise with Rabs.

Ray Warren is out and out the best RL commentator on the planet, as this survey shows, even Ray French is ahead of Eddie and Stevo.
Both Rays are close to the end of their commentary careers, and Ray Warren has suffered from ill health recently.
It is sad that we can't find people to take over the mantle, with Dave Woods being the only real replacement anywhere in the world on TV at the moment.
Most of the commentators are poor in comparison, and some are almost undeciferable especially the Aussie ones.
I think there should be a more concerted effort from SKY to trial new commentators and either add a 3rd weekly match and let them do that or red button them to see how they go.
Eddie and Stevo are not doing it any more for me, and that's nothing personal, it's just the EVERY GAME for the past 20 odd years familiarity of them more than anything.

Ray Warren suffers on his home turf in one of the (many) ways that Eddie and Stevo suffer. They've all been doing it for so long that they end up turning into caricatures of themselves. Characters on websites suffer the same fate, fwiw.
Warren's been doing it in one guise or other since the 70s, and for Channel 9 since the late 80s. If you're Australian, in your forties or younger and mad about the game you're probably sick of the sound of him and can predict half of everything he says.
I think he's got the perfect voice for it though, and he can match the pitch and timbre of it almost perfectly to the level of excitement of what's going on on the pitch. |

Warren is considered senile, and racist at that. On Aussie forums he has very little support.
There's a media cult around him no doubt, but ardent league fans don't seem to like him very much. The general consensus seems to be that he should have retired in the 90s.
If you check the Aussie forums there's threads every week bashing Warren in much the same way as on British forums there's threads every other week bashing Stevo. He's generally considered well past his sell by date. I suppose the big difference is that at one point in time Warren was a really great commentator, which you can't really say of Stevo. |

I think he is well liked here because he has a bit of a cult status. Most people only hear him a few times a year watching Origin etc, or over the top of 'big hits' reels on youtube etc and his funky Aussie voice is what we associate with the NRL. No doubt many Aussies hold Eddie and Stevo in the same regard. To them they symbolise Kangaroo tours etc. There are very few commentators in any sport who will be forever remembered for a particular piece of commentary in the way that Eddie will always be remembered for 'Wide to West'. |

Stevo and Rabs have character, I'll take them over these boring generic modern commentators. Who cares if they make mistakes? They are symbolic, entertaining and like it or not have come to define their sports.

I watch the NRL on Premier Sports for the Rugby League, not for the commentary. The commentary is an addition to the coverage. I could quite happily watch the match yet listen to the commentary on 2GB or ABC Grandstand, which I honestly much prefer to the TV commentary. |

Thread is proof that pommies have no taste.
The best commentary team was Nine when it was lead by Voss & Gould. Incredibly knowledgeable pairing and knew how to call a game.
Hadley is a cancer and should stick to brow-beating retirees on talk radio while Warren is a parody of his former self.

I agree with you that as a person Ray Hadley is a blight on humanity. But his destructive personal attacks on others only occurs on his radio program in the mornings. He is at radio station 2GB, which is owned by John Singleton, a vulgar entrepreneur who demands ratings at any price. So Hadley, and his preceding breakfast show colleague and arch conservative Alan Jones (former coach of rugby union and rugby league), have found that personal vilification of other public figures is good for ratings. I am sure that they also enjoy doing it. But both have been sued for defamation (Andrew Voss sued Ray Hadley for defamation over a Hadley outburst on radio 2GB in which he called Voss, amongst other things, a "moron" and a "grub" for saying that a statue of Ray Warren recently erected did not look much like Ray Warren. In an out of court settlement which avoided a trial, Hadley apologised to Voss on air, and allegedly paid Voss a six figure sum, according to the Australian media. Subsequently Voss did not have his contract renewed by Channel Nine).
