Certain journalists are constantly bleating on about how current SL is unsustainable because 'crowds are down' .

Wakefield did the same thing last year .. it's a case of bringing fans back that were disillusioned by the previous regime there .

Show me evidence of this constant bleating about SL attendances by RL journalists or the RFL and I'll gladly concede the point.

Out of 125 fixtures played thus far in 2013 (not including magic weekend fixtures), 32 out of 125 have shown an increase in attendance compared to the corresponding SL fixtures last year. 93 out of 125 fixtures have shown a decrease in attendance compared to the corresponding SL fixtures last year.

For the first time since way back in Round 1, we finally see a round of fixtures in 2013 where the attendances were higher than for the same games between the same teams last season. They were +2.10% up on last season, due in large part to the remarkable turnout at the Catalan home game against Hull KR played in Toulouse where 14,858 were in attendance. That attendance is in sharp contrast to the attendances for this fixture in previous seasons... 7,337 in 2012... 8,252 in 2011... 6,513 in 2010... and 9,073 in 2009. Catalan home attendances were down by 13.76% on last year, they are now only down by 2.91% on last year.

It is worth bearing in mind that without this remarkably anomalous Toulouse attendance at the weekend, overall attendances for Round 19 would have been down by over 12% compared to the same fixtures between the same teams last year, therefore the current trend for regular double-digit percentage falls in SL attendances remains a worrying factor.

During the current franchised, 14 club, top 8 play-off system SL era... the total attendances in SL to date remain the lowest we have ever witnessed. Neither the replacement of the poorly-supported Crusaders with the better-supported Widnes, or the establishment of 2 new stadia, or the re-establishment of heavily-discounted SL tickets have prevented 2013 SL attendances from being the worst on record so far.

This years attendances are not the worst on record, they are less than 5% away from being the second best in the history of the game.

SL attendances this season for the 132 fixtures played so far this season are the worst recorded during the current franchised, 14 club, top 8 play-off system SL era when compared to the same fixtures (replacing Widnes with Crusaders in 2009, 2010 and 2011) are they not?

they are indeed, but the are vastly superior to the pre SL winter game played by Yorkshire pit villages we previously endured. That's these attendances are considered 'bad' yet rank so highly in the history of the game is proof of the growth of the game and a cause for celebration and a big + in favour of the 14 team franchised top 8 play-off system as opposed to the P+R infected winter pit village game no?

I don't possess all the historical data on RL attendances but weren't post war RL attendances huge during the 40's, 50's and well into the 60's? And they were played in winter! It wasn't always like the 70's and the 80's when we endured an era of poor attendances (apart from tasty CC fixtures of course).

What historical database on RL attendances do you have evidential access to which makes you so adamant that current SL attendances must rank so highly in the history of the game and are a cause for celebration?

I do know that for at least large part of those decades attendances at games were deliberately limited because of WW2
