Which sports commentary teams do you like best?

Remember Channel 9 has a team which includes -- apart from the main commentator -- Phil Gould, Peter Sterling, Wally Lewis, Andrew Johns, and Brad Fittler.

Fox Sports has a team which includes Greg "Brandy" Alexander, Gary Belcher, Mark Gasnier and Brett Kimmorley.

Sky Sports has a team which includes, apart from Eddie and Stevo, Phil Clarke, Brian Carney and a host of current and former coaches.

BBC coverage has a team which includes Jonathan Davies, Clare Balding, Brian Noble, Ian Milward and other current and former coaches.

beIN SPorts coverage is entirely in French, and can be seen only by subscription, or via Superleague TV highlights on the internet each week when Catalans are at home.

For me it has to be ray warren and phill Gould and then the premier sports team of dave woods Brian noble and Andrew Henderson

The dave woods who on saturday informed everyone that hkr's 2 hull born hodgsons are not only un-related but were not even born in the same country!!!

Good Heavens! What could he have been thinking? Perhaps he was thinking of Brett Hodgson of the Warrington Wolves?

The Channel 9 team are far and away the best in the game. Sky need to start looking around for a team that can make SL a little more interesting, I've no problem with Eddie and Stevo, but they really need a second team to do the other match of the weekend.

Those two lads that used to do it at Leeds were pretty good.

Ray Warren for me, Eddie and Stevo (The Leeds Rhino's appreciation society) must be reminded the game commentary is NOT an extension of "Boots n All", Super League back-chat, "Super League Supermen" the Red button or a private little chit chat club that gets so obviously bored when the games aren't between top 4 contenders.

I don't really have a favorite commentary team but I think Jean has limited the debate in this thread by it just been about the TV side of commentating. Personally I prefer the radio commentary to TV commentary.

I just wish Sky would revert to a 2 man commentary team instead of having 4 people at once trying to express their opinion on a video ref decision.

Like Sadfish said, a 2nd team to do the 2nd game of the weekend would be good. I enjoyed the different commentary team on the Hull derby after the usual lot had just done Wigan/Saints. I think it would improve Eddie & Stevo as well to just strip it back to them, the introduction of Clarke made Sky commentary worst and Carney I like but is wasted as the 4th voice.

That is simply false. The only person who is possibly disliked at Channel 9 is Phil Gould. Ray Warren is revered.

I just realised that, while Andrew Voss is seen in Australia on Fox Sports, his employer is Sky Sports New Zealand. Fox Sports takes the feed from their New Zealand affiliate.

Also, in case people don't know, since last year, when Andrew Voss was fired by Channel Nine (because of a personal conflict resulting in a law suit against Ray Hadley, which Voss won), Ray Hadley has covered the games from Queensland for Channel Nine on a Friday, while Ray Warren covers the Sydney game.

I guess Eddie and Stevo are icons. But of course Warren is Australian so he must automatically be some sort of superhuman and better than anything in this country. Dinky-dee! Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie!

I would suspect that Eddie and Stevo are not icons, but are tolerated by the majority. Ray Warren however is a figure who has been plying his trade for over 40 years and is still respected. As I said, Channel Nine, like all the networks, does viewer surveys. If Ray Warren was unpopular as he is with your handful of posters on the Australian website, he would have been pulled off the screen by now and replaced by Hadley (who appears to be being groomed for the job, because Ray Warren is battling prostate cancer, not unpopularity).



Ray Warren is not admired just because he is Australian. Ray Warren is an immaculate game caller. I have my criticisms of his banter with Phil Gould, which is so obviously staged, and also repetitious, and thus irritating to me. But when it comes to calling the play he is the best, because he still adjusts his excitement and intensity levels to the excitement level of the play that is taking place. Ray Hadley and the BBC's Dave Woods are also good at that. Ray Warren has the experience of having been a horse race radio broadcaster at the beginning of his career, which seems to have been perfect training for calling rugby league. By contrast Andrew Voss keeps screaming his call when nothing spectacular is taking place, and he speaks too fast, which is why I don't rate him as highly.

On another note, I enjoy Rodolphe Pires because he is so genuinely passionate, even though as a Frenchman he is blatantly partisan for Catalans. It will be interesting, if Toulouse enters Super League, to hear his commentary on the two Catalans vs Toulouse matches.

I limited it to TV commentary for two reasons:

(1) because I think more people watch the TV coverage than listen to the radio coverage.

(2) more important, because there are just too many radio broadcast teams in both countries to keep up with (think of all the BBC local radio teams and all the Australian ones in NSW and Queensland).

Not true... Gould is disliked universally but Warren splits opinion the channel 9 coverage is unversally hated!


IMO he is a legend in his own opinion... which is as big as his ego.
