i was noticing huddersfield great form this season and was wondering if brownie was using this tactic at all
SL teams dont try and slow down the PTB at all, and its a very important part of the nrl so i wouldnt be surprised if brown did coach this
though as freddy says above, last year he gave the storm a huge serve for using this very same tactic

we are getting rid of it with 2 refs.
there are many other legal ways to slow down the PTB though
though many nrl teams use other illegal tactics like the chicken wing, turtle and placing their boot down on top of the tackled players leg as they get up to slow things down |

It's been around for a couple of years now but this year the refs seem to be picking up on it and therefore everyone else is then noticing it in tackles they dont.
I've seen a few chicken wings on the go too.

cant see what mattersons on about watched the game twice now , once live and once on sky and didnt see the offence once, nor did i hear the commentary team mention it, sounds like a large case of sour grapes to me.

Grapple maybe not but the 1, maybe 1.5 secs that Hudds had to set defence was crucial to their result last night. In addition the speed of the line in defence created the basis of a great performance.
Hudds pushed the boundaries of the game and benefited, good on them, but I for one would not like to see it week in week out, we'd have far fewer quality games like last night was.
Even thought we lost that was great entertainment for the money.

Oh the irony. Last nights game was quality and exciting because Castleford were the only team playing. Huddersfield did not turn up and therefore the excitement was only down to one team.
if you want to talk about pushing boundaries what about the constant offsides by Cas. Go back and watch the game again on Sky. in the last 10 minutes westerman was so far offside i thought that Cas were playing Keith senior.
all teams push the boundaries some do it better than others ie Saints and Leeds and some do different things. there were NO grapple tackles last night. there was lots of poor technique from both teams ( actually there are very few good tacklers in SL 95 % of tackles seem to be between chest and neck) |

Huddersfield have for a number of years now been a very physical side and I defy anyone to say a team wont try to slow the PTB down if they can.
Sure the Giants were physical in the tackle and they did slow can down but why wouldnt they? Gansons job is to keep it fair so the onus is on him not Huddersfield.
Well done Giants, effort not execution got you the win and thats never a bad thing.

Sorry to be all tit for tat here, but where i was stood we were inline of the Hudds defence for a long time when we were on your line in the second half, in the 2 sets of six i actually took notice of, at least 4 and even has high as 7 were offside and well offside aswell, i know you won, and deserved but how can you complain about us being offside when you were by far the worst culprits i have seen all season... although it didnt help the topuch judges being stood in the wrong position.
and YES there were a hell of alot of grapple tackles last night, four a row in the second half from whichever Hudds players were involved, maybe we wern't angels either, i wasn't watching for us doing it, but to say there wern't any is completly and utterly wrong. |

as i said seen it twice watching it live you miss things , but watching again on tv i for one didnt see any grapple tackles by either side, also none of the 15 penalties the giants conceded were for grapple tackles, yes the previous week against hull we were penalised for some, but on watching again hull were doing the same.

Well i am all sorry to be Tit for tat as well BUT i have so far watched the first half on Sky and was looking at lots of different things in one ten minute period there were 4 incidents of tackles by Cas players where there was contact with the neck area either in commissioning the tackle or in the wrestle
at 20.16 on Cudjoe, on 20.40 on jackson, on 22 on B Hodgson, 26 on whatuira on 40 minutes quite a bad one on Hodgson by Mc Goldrick. All of these involved action to the neck area. None of these however seemed to me to be deliberate but bad tackling technique all of which Huddersfield were guilty of as well. Maybe it is defintion but for me a grapple tackle is a deliberate or reckless hold on the neck. It does not mean every time a player has a tackle and the hand or arm comes into contact near the neck. On that basis we would be down to five a side every week.

Ganson seems to have no love for Huddersfield last season he binned two of our players and sent another off for backchatting him. If he did not penalise them is that because they were not there, he did not see them or he is becoming mellow in his old age.
How many times did Eddie and Stevo mention Grapple tackles certainly not in the first 40 minutes.
there is a problem with bad tackling in all teams and occassionally a GRAPPLE tackle but for Matterson to lay the blame for the defeat on our tackling is pathetic. Last season we were rightly condemned when Sharp blamed the refs for everything and making excuses maybe Cas fans need to look through what Matterson says. |

I'm a bit confused. I didn;t think the grapple tackle was about slowing the play th ball down, more hanging round the players kneck making it uncomfortable for the attacker.
Surely that is a seperate issue from slowing the ptb down?

Read the article properly. He hasn't blamed the defeat on that. "At the end of the day, that's not why we lost. We had enough opportunities." He was just merely commenting on what was clear to everyone. |
