There is a valid reason and it’s the one that was given. He tracked the wrong man.
It’s inexcusable, unprofessional and shouldn’t ever happen. But that’s the reason.

As a saints fan I disagree. The ref needs to be respected.

That means shut up and listen, the ref did the right thing in both the Matty lees case and lms. I'm tired of the softly softly approach.

There is no need for a player to talk to the ref. The captain need only responsed to the ref.

If they want to question a call do it after the game, or raise a complaint with the head of refs.

But surely there’s more options before a yellow card isn’t there? I don’t know the incident in question but surely he could penalise for dissent and take the team back another 10 before resorting to a sin bin?
