I've never heard of 'Mad Friday'


Just thought I would share that with you...

Glad you have, since that now makes two of us.

Mad Friday is split this year. Normally the last Friday before Crimbo, but with Christmas eve being next Friday a lot of people will finish today, but loads will finish next Friday too.

Can see Thursday next week being ”mad”

Isn't it 'black' friday?

I always thought it was just the friday that coincides with the last pay day before xmas.

That would be next Friday for us NHS employees.

Yeh Mad Friday has always been the last Fri before Xmas for us and it was pretty busy in Halifax last night.

Who only get about 14 quid a month. Crap night out for you then.

My mate who works at Royal Mail has just got a nice £150 Xmas bonus.

I could only dream of the NHS doing the same, in fact there looking right this minute for us all to lose 10% over the next two years to save £50 million pound.

Is that right? Are the Agenda for Change pay scale bands all being reduced by 10%? I must have missed that being announced.

Have you noticed now how any banker you meet (when they venture out) always says something like "OK, I'm a banker. I admit it. But I'm an ordinary retail banker looking after customer accounts at branch level, not one of these investment bankers in London..."?*

Sort of like Clinton's "I smoked it yes but did not inhale..."?

Have you ever read the "Alex" cartoon strip? Sums up perfectly what a load of scumbags investment bankers generally are, IMO.

Not every band is having a 10% reduction (well it still has to be put to a ballot - I've voted no) although then jobs become under threat.

You're band 8's and 9's and A,B,C,D,E etc are protected but then that's what I would expect for them to look after their own while frontline services are cut here, there and everywhere.

My missus is a Band 6, and she's never heard of this proposed reduction - that's why I'm puzzled! Is this something local? Mind you, her frontline department is already more than 25% below establishment and they are keeping it that way (that's why she's having to work 11+ hour days...) so maybe that is the alternative strategy?

Does she work at the BRI or St Lukes?
I'm not sure how this can be implemented across the various departments when everything is being drastically cut back.

It's a hard one to call as no one want's to see/feel the threat of redundancies.

I've not seen anything national about cuts in the bands - can't imagine that getting in under the radar? The pay freeze (not sure if it extends to the annual increments within each band...do you know at all?) coupled with worryingly-high inflation and the likely increase in pension contributions will mean a real-terms reduction for sure anyway though (same as most of the private sector has suffered last two years).

On the subject of redundancies, we had to make 40% of the staff at where I am currently working redundant earlier this year, on the instructions of the (overseas) owners. Much of all that process fell to me. Many other businesses have seen the same. Its no fun for anyone.

The only guy I know who works in a bank is far removed from the investment side and, I would guess, deserves whatever he gets in the way of bonuses, if only for being the public face of the profession and having to take the 'stick' for the investment bods.

I've not seen the cartoons no, though I suppose they deserve to be shot at. To be honest, like most people I was happy when my peps and isas were making a decent amount above inflation, but again like most I wasn't financially literate enough to see the dangers and expected the various authorities to be doing what they were supposed to be doing. Of course these investment bankers had been doing similar things for thirty odd years with a few up and downs but without approaching the abyss, so I guess it was easy for the regulators to feel that every thing was OK. What, still in my financial illiteracy mode, I can't understand is why so little has been done since to rein them in. Maybe, putting hope against reason, they believe future profits will make everything better again.

Other than not knowing why people are allowed to use 'borrowed' shares to speculate on the hope of a crash and exactly why Standard and Poor have the power to bring sovereign countries to their knees, I think I might have a better understanding now. But perhaps not!
