I reckon he could potentially make a good coach....he clearly knows a lot about the game and would have a lot of knowledge to impart. Whether he has the mental capacity and general intelligence to do the job is another matter.

Tactically I think he'd be stellar. He'd do a far better job than Slick Mick, who really doesn't have a clue.

I think the discipline to maintain a professional schedule and get through the season would be the challenge for him. It was a struggle for Basil, once the pressure was on cracks started appearing. He could motivate the players far more than the likes of Potter but there was always the risk of implosion.

Long would have to detach himself from being one of the lads. He wouldn't be able to go drinking and partying with the players and I think thats where he would struggle.

i think he would be a better no2 rahter than having the pressure and detachment of being a head coach - working under someone like Daniel Anderson he would work well.

like you say, having the ability to detach himself from being one of the lads would be his biggest struggle....a problem that Bobbby Goulding has experienced in his coaching career. Although, Goulding is far more of a nutter than Long.

How about having Sean Long and Bobbie Goudling as a coaching combo? That has potential.

From what he has to say about how badly he was handled by the Saints board at the end , i doubt he will even use a urinal properly whilst there, but speaks with love over the fans!!

Thats not badly, thats just sensible, as was him taking a better, 2yr deal at Hull.

Long is not one of the great thinkers of the game. He is unlikely to get a coaching job of any kind.

in his book he has nothing but great things to say about the way that Eamonn and the board treated him towards the end of his career. they told him well in advance of the tampering deadline that he had a 1 year contract if he wanted it, and if not he was free to talk to other clubs.

If Longy is to be a head coach then he will need to go as an asst first to learn the trade. Too much of a big step up from player to head coach.
No2 at Hull FC or HKR then perhaps head coach.
He may be given the U20s at some club and see how he progresses from there.
Can't see Longy walking out of the game he's been so successful at as a player. He just needs to get the right job in starting his coaching career.

Successful coaching is not just about knowing the game, which Longy does, but being able to communicate what he knows to players (which he'll struggle with, I think). It's where a lot of talented former players fall down (in a number of different sports).

Until Longy has proven himself as a successful coach or assistant coach I wouldn't want him anywhere near the Saints coaching job. Partly because of his ego and also it would be a huge risk to take on a rookie coach at a club that should be winning silverware.

What would you call Harry Potter then? He was hardly massively experienced. He also has zero personality and no clue about tactics either.

Fair point but he came off the back of a hugely successful season with Catalans, at least he came with some kind of reputation.

Surely some thing that Sean is certainly not, so we'll sing for him and leave Potter for Saints. I just hope that the Saints fans give him a cheer tonight even though he's crossed over the Pennines. Let's look for a good game of League and at least we can all celebrate the Cas lads walloping the Rhinos, we know how we all love them........grannyfan Cindy

He'll get a great reception before the game and then that's it. He isn't one of us anymore sadly but all good things come to an end sooner or later.
