| If Cayless is fit for most of next season and plays a blinder there'll be some egg on faces in St. Helens.

Why? His contract was up and it's not like we had a choice about releasing him was it.

Exactly - if we'd offered him a new 12 month deal and he didnt recover properly we'd really look like planks

It depends on his injury condition. I have said all along that I have no problems whatsoever with offering Cayless a contract extension (on reduced terms) provided there is no CHRONIC medical condition blocking the way. There are players with chronic/career-ending injuries and there are "injury prone" players.
A chronic injury is one which does not respond to treatment and will in all likelihood keep a player out for a good percentage of games per season and steadily reduce his playing capacity over time. We can also throw in career ending injury - Newlove's ankle, Scully's groin. For players suffering such the only realistic choice is to get shut.
But the "injury prone" player is something else. Let me say there is no medical evidence toward "injury proneness" in healthy athletes and so they're probably best termed - Unlucky. Unlucky players are those which are seemingly injured every day of every week, but with a host of injuries - none of which are chronic or interdependent.
There's a massive difference between a player who has missed 60% of games because of a chronic injury and another who has missed 60% of games with a succession of non-interdependent injuries. The former, when fully fit, plays like a shell of his former self, whereas the latter just plays like his former self (if isn't past it) – provided, and this is the key for Cayless – he gets enough time to get back to full fitness and form following a long lay off. Cayless has NEVER had such recovery time because it isn't three weeks before he's crocked again.
Sure, if Cayless' injury is career-ending or chronic – get shut. But if it isn't – if he's just unlucky – we should have kept hold. Especially as our front row doesn't need denuding any further.

Not really. Given his appearance record for us I would have let him go as I think most others would. We also don't know how much he was on but given the quality of his bird it doesn't look like it was peanuts.

| I really hope his luck changes and he gets back to his best.
Was top class for us when he's fit.
I think he was big loss for us this year.

If he is suffering from a chronic injury, the treatment for which can only be palliative, then I'd let him go. But if he's just been unlucky and dogged by a string of unconnected injuries then I'd think very seriously before releasing him. After all, if the club physician says there is no medical impediment to returning to past form it would be silly to cut him loose. When fit he is an excellent front rower and with him back to 100% and Fozzard coming in it would be like having two new props.
As for his wage demands. I'm sure that both he and his agent know his stock has fallen over the last couple of years. Could be a great bargain.

| Good luck, JC.
He was one of the first names I'd have put on the teamsheet in his first two seasons, cracking player.
