Any of the full backs I mentioned before would have saved those tries. Wigan with Phelps at fullback wouldn't have conceded those tries.

Wellens is a highly unorthodox full back. Whilst he lacks pace he often makes up for it in areas few full backs venture.

For years he has been right up near the top of the metres gained table, carries per game table, try scoring table and tackle busts. There is no full back anywhere close to that achievement. Certainly Radlinski never was. Did he ever bust a tackle?

Wellens days as a top fullback have gone imo. Too slow!

How many times do we get beat by a little kick thru behind our defence ? The back 3 of Wellens, Gardner ans Meli, must be the slowest in world rugby by some distance.

No. 16 in the try scorers table.
No. 15 in the metres made table.
No. 4 in the carries table.
No. 5 in the tackle busts table.

Aside from Hodgson (who is inferior to Wellens in carries and tackle busts) what other full back is hitting anywhere near these figures?

Figures don't win prizes. Wello is a problem because the rest of the side is so slow. If we had anyone in the outside backs with any semblance of pace it wouldn't matter that he's slow, but we don't.

There is no stats for loss of speed. He is too slow to make the plays. Paul Wellens positional play is fantastic and his still a good player (i'd have him in the pack). But the amount of try's we let in by a simple kick thru is really disturbing. Also when it's raining Paul looks like his got led weights on his feet. Time and time again he gets absolutely skinned by opposite players e.g. Lauititti at KR, Donald in the Grand Final etc....

Figures have always won prizes. The team finishing with the biggest number wins. The player scoring the most tries wins the top tryscorer prize. The player with the most votes wins MOS.

Everybodys got weakneses. But the time as come when Pauls main weakness is rapped in most of the big games.

We already have a replacement for Wellens in Lomax. So it's not like we're badly off. Most SL clubs struggle to field ONE decent fullback.
